The ogre who defends his village

Summer had come to the land of Anvil. The air was warm, the sun bright, and the birds sang from their nests in the trees. The children played in the tall grass while the tramping of hooves on the grass disturbed the quiet.

The family of goblins sat around the fire eating their meal. There were two men and two women, the males being called a hairy oaf and a tall woman with a pointed nose. The two women were named Buu, who had round hips and legs, a flat bosom and a prominent nose, and her mother, who had pointed ears and milky white flesh.

Buu looked at her mother while she ate her food. "Mom, do you remember when you went to your first hut to meet your husband at the ogre's village in the mountains?"

The tall woman smiled at her daughter to show the pride she felt. "Yes. I was only 5 days old. I have been through a lot in my time in Anvil. I remember when the bog cat tried to rob me of my silver, of how the unicorn poked holes in my fur the day I was born. I remember how I endured goat fall poisoning and the winter of water. When did I meet your father?"

The goblin child took a bite from the bread on her plate. "He came and rescued you from the ogre's hut. You were only 10 days old and had not been washed or cleaned, but he still loved you."

The muscular oaf spoke over his bowl. "His dragon ate my first daughter."

The tall woman's face was a mask of sadness and she hated to remember the years that she had spent in that ogre's hut. "My mother was a great wife to me and a good mother. When she died, I was 17 days old and my body was still poorly suited for motherhood. My fur was greasy from the oil of the cooking fire, my skin burned from the sun and the sweat of the others in the hut and was battered by their talons if my belly was between them and the fire pit. When he came in and looked at me, I saw nothing but despair. His dragon looked at me with such hunger. It burned my fur off my body and ate me. He left my skin to rot."

The two male goblins were silent for a long moment. Finally the muscular father spoke. "My son was eaten by an ogre."

The mother looked at her friend and husband. "The next day, the ogre went to the woods and gave birth to a human boy. His wife was human and told us that humans and ogres were able to cross breed. I offered my services to them as his part-time maid to clean areas no one else wanted to touch. He brought me to the human city to meet his mother and his mother brought other women in to train me." She paused.

"The humans on my side of town proved to be to be terrible people. They beat their sons, raped the women in their businesses or houses, and did not know the value of silver. They used weapons made from wood or bone. They killed their own children, other humans, and animals as if they were nothing. We had to leave or be swallowed up by the humans on our side of town. We could stay here, sell off our animals and jewelry, or head north, but I don't remember what we did."

The muscular goblin interrupted her. "I was a gladiator. The ogre only let me fight the humans, but I remember the pain."

The next morning Buu ran through the town to find her father. Her long brown hair flowed behind her and her purple eyes sparkled. The muscular men said she looked great with her clothes ripped and torn. She skipped across the street and ignored all the staring eyes. The ogres recognized the ogre, but did not want to speak, and so provided meager guidance.
