I was aware of this report before starting to ride:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_findings_in_the_Hurt_Report
Very interesting for both new riders and experienced ones.
One good friend advised me to say out loud before every ride "Everyone is out to get me"...
This is serious business. If this study would be re-done today I am positive conclusions would be much worse.
Today cars are packed with a lot of technology, yet the drivers are not always taking all the info in. Sometimes they stare in the GPS screen too long... etc.
Cars today are larger, there are SUV's everywhere. It is harder for a biker to see traffic in front and around. Also a biker is harder to be seen in this world of giants.
Everyone I know drives or wants an SUV :( This false perception that they are safer comes at the expense of the motorcyclist because his/her presence will most likely perceived as harmless. Even if the brain correctly interprets the image of a biker coming, because of his small size it may be deduced that you have time to make your maneuver (cut him off).
All this to say that car riders should me more aware, not just car driver which also ride.
Sometimes (very rarely) there are TV campaigns...
Many cars are regarded as appliances like a smartphone.
Be smart, stay alive on the roads.
And when you drive a car... autonomous driving cars are NOT the solution. Keep your eyes on the road and you may not kill a biker today.
