Ever since I've been living in Berlin, I've decided not to own a car any longer. The location of my apartment is close to a subway station and several bus stops, which means for me public transport is by far the quickest and easiest way to get around the city. However, of course there are times when you need a car - visiting friends outside of the city boundary, shopping trips etc.. - in these instances I like to use either Car2Go or DriveNow. Both are short term car rental systems, marketed as 'car sharing', owned by Mercedes Benz and BMW respectively.
Unfortunately, an increasing problem around the city is that people who are driving these cars do not always drive with the same respect and courtesy as they may do so in their own car. The reports of traffic regulation violations and accidents involving these vehicles is sadly increasing.
Last week whilst taking a early morning stroll, I came across this Mercedes A-Class from Car2Go which had seemingly been involved in an accident and abandoned on the pavement.
Hopefully nobody was injured in the accident, the car didn't seem to be too badly damaged. There was no sign of the other car involved in the accident, and no police were around so I presume it had happened in the middle of the night and the scene had already been cleared up.
I love the flexibility of the Car2Go and DriveNow schemes. Do you use such short term car rentals in your city?
