The first "Iphone" wasn't made by Apple and wasn't and Iphone. It was the Motorola Rokr. Why do I say that well before Apple entered the world of cellphone Motorola was a major player in the Cell Phone world and they came out the Rokr in 2005 two years before the first Iphone by Apple.
It doesn't look anything like an Iphone, so why do I and so many others consider it the first Iphone? Simple Itunes and mp3 support. The Rokr was the first cellphone that integrated with licensed Apple itune support. From the Rokr you could connect directly to the itune store and buy music and download it onto your cellphone and listen to your music. At that time if you wanted to listen to portable music you needed a separate Mp3 player and you had to download you music from a computer onto the player. The Rokr changed that with its integrated mp3 player and direct connection to the itune store with a mobile device.
If it weren't for the Rokr showing proof of concept there may have never been the Iphone. You need to remember that in 2005 very very few people had a smart phone and if they did it was most likely a Blackberry (business phone). Your cell phone wasn't your connection to the internet and the world it is now. In 2005 people still used their cell phone to make phone calls and some people were even sending Text messages, not very many since your cell plan charged you for text messages back then. Not many people were actually using their Rokr to buy music either since data charges were outrageous. What it did do was allow you to carry one less device in the day of Cell Phones, Mp3 players, Pagers, PDA's and Cameras. Yes back then it would not be uncommon to carry all those devices at one time so anything that allowed you to combine two devices into one was a break through. Now your Smartphone does all of that and is a pocket computer too.
So the next time you are listening to music on your Smartphone give a little thought to the Rokr, since without it there may have never been and Iphone and the Smartphones we all can not live without today.
