Greetings Steemians!
I'm Kaye, a metallurgical engineer by profession and a bookdragon by passion. π
Two months ago, I decided to uninstall my SNS apps and limited myself to Facebook's Messenger for communication purposes. I guess you'd agree that most people would chat you up on Messenger instead of actually texting or calling.
Anyho.
They said that if the internet is an iceberg, I'm only skimming through the tip of it and yet I felt suffocated. The online "social circle" I created for myself (i.e. the people I chose to follow but not necessarily following me too) has become toxic. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't following bad people and some posts are really uplifting too. I guess it was just me. I just felt like I'm being pressured to maintain a certain virtual image and it just became too much.
I'm not the type who cares about numbers of followers and popularity. I actually value my privacy so much that I ended up unfriending and blocking people who I don't really connect with in person, and almost all of my accounts are private (my "bookstagram" is public). But the things I read and see on those sites confused me as to how I really want to live my "virtual life" i.e. of how much info I should be sharing, how often I should be sharing, etc. So I chose to go on a SNS break.
I've heard about SteemIt among my crypto and my "blogger" friends last year but I didn't really got on the hype because I was also having some "identity" trouble with my blog (I'll talk about it some other time). So why am I here now?
I realized that this site is more than a "crypto generating scam" as other would put it. There's actually some noteworthy content and a community here. I feel like I can live out my virtual social life here without having to conform to expectations by people who know me all my life, or those who knew me at a certain page of it.
If you're curious how I came to that realization (and even if you aren't), I came upon a travel blog while searching for things to do on my short vacation. When I realized that it was on steemit, I remembered about it and started researching. Then, epiphany!
I hope to be able to help this community grow and I hope I'd be able to connect more with all of you. Here's an adorable baby Panpan and Ice Bear (We Bare Bearsβ’) for your troubles in reading through my intro rant. π
Ciao.
