Hello all you beautiful Steemians! Happy Hard Fork 19 Day!
With all that extra SBD, it is time to invest in a workspace that you can call your own. A book desk is a great way to celebrate this neat equality moment.
Supplies Needed
• 100 hardback books (a few softbacks are ok, just not all)
o If you are taller than 5’ 7” (1.7 meters) you will about 4 books per additional half an inch (1.27 cm) of desk height
• 2” X 4” (60.96 cm X 121.92 cm) by 3/4” (1.9 cm) thick wood for the desk top
o If not in ‘murica and using the real metric math, pick a piece of wood that is inexpensive, but not to big as to keep the desk from bowing)
• Scissors
• Measuring tape
• Masking tape
• Strong glue
• Pencil
• Marker
• 12 screws – 2 inches (5.08 cm) in length
• Screwdriver or drill
• Covered area to glue in
Step 1
Decide on the height of the desk. Sit in the chair you will be using and measure your arms at the height that is comfortable for typing and working.
Back Designs discuss things to pay attention to when you measure.
I feel comfortable at about 28 inches (71.12 cm).
Step 2
Find a blank wall or piece of furniture that you can place a strip of masking tape to mark the height. Draw (with a dark marker) a clear, thick line that will be your guide.
Step 3
Sort books into piles by size (not thickness). When stacked they should all be equal size.
Step 4
Remove all dust jackets. If from the library, cut the tape off so that you do not rip the sides into a yucky looking book.
Step 5
Stack your books. Start with using the widest longest books on the bottom as the feet of the desk. For the neat look, alternate the books from front to spine and back again, up the entire column.
You will need to build four columns for a more sturdy desk.
Step 6
Create your glue safe workspace.
Only glue one stack at a time as to not confuse the order and make your columns uneven.
Reverse the order of the books, one at a time. Use a thicker, stronger glue than @clevercreator did. Gorilla glue is probably best.
One book at a time, place glue on the top of current book in the pile, and work your way up the column. This puts them back into order.
Once they are glued, DO NOT pick up the column of books. Let the books set. You can attempt to slide them, but push the bottom book only or you risk pushing your tower over.
Step 7
Once the glue as set, within the columns, (about 24 to 48 hours), slide them into a position that you like. I was going for the “I am a geek, look at my books”, but the traditional placement of columns is great as well.
Step 8
Place the desktop wood on the book columns. Double check for alignment. Sit down and make sure the height is a good working height. Otherwise, add, or if necessary, remove books.
If all is well, screw in three screws into each book column from the top of the desk. Space them to allow for good coverage of area, but make sure you are screwing into the column and not empty space below.
Step 9
Sit back and enjoy. Yes, the top still need to be done, but look at what you just made!!
I have decided that I am going to put a thin epoxy on top of mine, with mementos underneath – give me a couple of weeks to decide what I am going to place in it…
As always – Keep Creating.
PS, if you made it this far, forgive me – with the HF 19, I got so excited to be curating today that I have not gotten to my accounting yet. Being that I have not taken anything out of my account, it will be coming soon.
My Current Give Back Programs
10% of the earnings from this post are set aside to fund domestic abuse projects that are designed and maintained by @clevercreator – I am currently working towards building a long-term assistance program.
10% of this post will be given back to the SteemIt Community through the amazing folks I find while doing my curation rounds.
As my earnings grow, these percentages will go up as well.
Every post that exceeds $100, and then multiples of 100 ($200, $300, $400, etc.), I will send out a book (used books that need good homes), WITH a handwritten note signed by yours truly, @clevercreator – But wait there are rules…
• Your comment must be the most voted
• Include in your comment what you would like to focus on in the letter (maybe something to encourage you or an idea that you need help with)
• For every multiple of $100 this post earns, that many folks can will be able to win…so if the post earns $311.13, then there will be 3 wonderful folks that will see this book and letter come to them
• You address must be deliverable by standard mail – I am sorry, at this time, I cannot afford a courier
• Yes, you can live outside the United States and win
• You must have an active SteemIt account at the time the post pays out
• Of course, the most important rule – have fun and get the discussion going
• If you will pay too much in taxes, outside the US, tell me, and I will send you a small e-gift card from Amazon ( @renzoarg thank you)
