A Typical Day In Our Homeschool

The title of this post is kind of misleading because there is no "typical" day at our house especially not in our homeschool! I'm going to give a sort of timeline of our day today because when we first started on this journey I thought for sure we were way behind and never would catch up and I want people to know there is no certain way to do this. I started out homeschooling Frankie when he was about 4ish but every parent does the ABC's 123's with little kids but some of my friend's kids were the same age and already reading!!! Holy Crap we hadn't even started officially and we were already behind! So I bought some workbooks at the Dollar Tree and now here we are...

To say we aren't early morning people is an understatement so we don't normally get up til anywhere between 8 and 9. Some days it's earlier and on some days we aren't up until 10(these days are few and far between). Start off with breakfast of course. The kids usually help clean up and I start a load of laundry. Most days we start school work around 11 which gives us time to do a few things or if it's nice enough they go run off some energy playing outside. We always start off with a book. They both have a different sentence to copy every day plus practice their cursive writing. This has been harder than I was hoping but I have alway's heard the earlier you start cursive the easier it is for them to get the hang of!

They are both just working on reading at the moment so we are reading new books all the time. Our public library is our best friend and we go every other Thursday. Ask the librarians if they have a special thing for teachers where you can take out extra books for a longer period of time. Before we could only do 10 kids books for 2 weeks but now we can take 25 and we have 4 weeks but we always bring them back before then:) We spend roughly 45 minutes to an hour doing reading work. Then we move on to math. This has been an easy subject for both kids so far and I feel like they catch on quick so we do quizzes before we move on.

We also do geography(states and capitals for now), health(learning about body systems), and Bible study. These are not done every single day. Art projects are about a once or twice a week thing depending on what we are working on that week. Both kids are learning to cook things for themselves(under supervision of course) like pancakes, grilled cheese, and scrambled eggs.

We end each subject reading out of Harry Potter. We all love it and they get mad when I stop right in the middle of something exciting that Frankie says "you just wait till I can read them all by myself because I won't put them down til I'm finished!" which is awesome! On a good day where everything is going our way, it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to do everything. On days like today, it took over 3 since one kid absolutely didn't want to do what needed to get done. I told her it's time to write to 200. It took a good 45 minutes to get to 37. Some days are easy peasy and some days make me rethink homeschooling but at the end of the day, it's always worth it:)

So if you are thinking of homeschooling and want a glimpse into what it's really like, don't look at the Pinterest search and think oh I have everything organized so I won't be that mom that's wearing pajamas at lunchtime and trying to find her cold coffee(it's always in the microwave). Some days you will be that mom. I am also a working mom so some days we are trying to get schoolwork in before I leave for work and I am a frazzled mess but we get it done. My kids are awesome and they aren't secluded from the outside world. We are part of a homeschool group and they are amazing. I don't always fit in because there are only a couple working moms in the group but they make you feel like you belong with them. I can't stress enough how good the group has been for my kids.

I wish I had more pictures for this post but it would just be pictures of my kids doing stuff and then I wouldn't have anything to post about later on! I enjoy homeschooling and I think it's making my kids better off in the long run. My niece's school had a threat about a month ago by a 10-year-old. The world is a disturbing place unfortunately but I am hoping we are raising the generation that will change it for the better!

Thank you for reading my very long post! Upvote me please:)
