We have such a GREAT winterwonderland in the Netherlands, and I have to say in quarantine with snow is so much better going outside than untill now. We had so much fun and the dogs went mad. The fact that the weather is so extreem with 15 centimeter snow, school arent opening tomorrow after this weather and code orange.

I will try to follow the weather as closely as possible in the coming days because the boys will have to bike to school , but I think we will go and walk , that is so much safer. An increasingly colder layer of air, a lot of snow in the region, local ice, snowdrift and perhaps in the north also a regional little snowstorm. These are all facets that initiate winter periods that can last like a day or 8.

CODE ORANGE is switched on as off today (Sunday) throughout the week. The country is in chaos of excitement due to winter conditions. People can have some more fun.But eventhough it was fierce cold, the hours outside was so nice. The boys and the dogs had so much fun and were icky when they returned home. An icy wind in combination with snow and possibly ice are not ideal for going out, yet everybody wanted to be outside today, untill 21.00 because of the curfew. The government gave the overall advice not to hit the road if you didn’t have to go outside.

In many places it still snowing lightly, but gradually the intensity of the snow falling decreases further. Tomorrow during the day it may snow again, especially in the southeastern parts of our country. In addition, the temperature drops further and further: at this moment it is already moderately freezing in many places, that is -5 degrees and colder! So I hope we can ice skate.

Our sweet joey was running so much and along the way eating snow.

Ice days are becoming increasingly rare in our country.
Due to global warming, the number of ice days per winter half year in De Bilt ( Our countries head weather station ) is decreasing. On average, there were about 11 ice days per winter half year last century. Between 1981 and 2010, an average of 8 ice days per winter half year occurred, and from this winter onwards, the long-term average is only 6 ice days.

Ten times since the measurements started in 1901, a winter half year has had zero ice days. Of those ten times, that was four times in the last century, twice between 2000 and 2010 and four times since the winter of 2013-2014.

So we are lucky and we will have a great week ahead.

I have to say I also learned something today :

Do you know what snowdrift is? I didn’t but i looked it up and heard it on the news later today. We speak of snowdrift when snow is blown by a strong wind. Snowdrift can be very annoying to traffic. Normally snowflakes move from top to bottom. When there is a little wind they fall at an angle and when the wind blows snowflakes move almost horizontally. With wind force 6 or 7 there is snowdrift during snowfall.

Very annoying, and you cannot avoid it.
Due to snowdrift, visibility can be greatly reduced. Sometimes visibility is less than 100 meters. This is very annoying for traffic and often dangerous.

If you walk outside in such a weather situation, you can certainly become completely disoriented in open plains with strong winds. At temperatures below freezing and strong winds, the feeling temperatures are extra low. Hypothermia can then quickly occur, especially if you are not properly dressed.

Snow dunes, we had them to the side of the house, due to the wind.
The wind can also easily accumulate snow. On the road, this can create extra dangerous conditions, and if the accumulation continues for a long time, it can even cause snow dunes.

Visibility limitations due to snow need not only occur when snow falls. Especially when very dry snow has fallen, a strong wind can cause the snow to drift and drift. We call this snow drift. When the snow rises up to eye level, we speak of high drift snow. Otherwise it is low drift snow.

If there is a stormy wind (8 Bft) in a snow situation, we speak of a snow storm. Snow storms are rare in the Netherlands.

Thats all folks,

See you all next time, I have to run and have fun and go to the snow again.
