AFRI-INLEO INITIATIVE 19: HOW MUSIC CAME THROUGH FOR ME DURING MY ACADEMIC STRUGGLES ๐ŸŽต

Music as defined is the combination of sounds which are pleasant to the hearing which differentiates it from noise. Ability to hear good sounds, recognise it and be fascinated to such is part of human nature. Music has been explored over time in entertainment, educational and informative endeavors of humans and had also served as a major source of income or revenue for individuals, families, organisations or nations i.e. the music industry. However, another aspect of musical importance is in the area of healing and health especially as pertains to the soul i.e. mind of we humans.

Music is artistic in nature that can be expressed in the form of audio-visuals. The seeing and hearing abilities of humans are key to appreciating and enjoying music as music involves the vocal part which the human ability to hear can make for a better appreciation of this. Music can also be expressed in visual forms through live & recorded music videos, performances, dances etc which the seeing ability of we humans makes for the appreciation of such. In addition, the human mind or soul which is the seat of emotions, will, intellect, logic, mood can be affected due to challenges and situations of life which can be psychological requiring therapy.

Music has been found helpful in managing depressive conditions, bipolar mood disorders etc which shows the therapeutic part of music. Personally, one vivid moment i needed music the most and it came through for me was during my undergraduate days back then in the University when i had academic challenges specifically having to repeat a year based on the nature of my course of study as a health professional in one of the Federal institutions in Nigeria. It was really a challenging and tough moment for me and i was affected badly by the temporal setback then.

I had join a Christian fellowship on campus and i was part of the music unit and infact a leader in the unit. I summoned courage and i started the academic session all over again precisely my third year i.e. 300 level. I still continue in the music unit and by doing this, it really helped me because by attending rearshals, my mood which was sad was elevated and i became joyful because of the ability of music to elate. Not only this, i came across some christian songs whose lyrical content are so inspiring especially in the situation i was then. I was encouraged by the lyrics and hope begin to rise again for me. Such songs includes "Made A Way" by Travis Greene, "Its Not Over" by Isreal & New Breed and many others songs of such.

At the end of that repeated session, i passed all my exams with an outstanding success. Not only that, i finished well and graduated in flying colours with the turning point been right from that third year academic session. Therefore, music brings healing to the soul/mind if one opens up to the therapeutic ability of music and engages with it. The human mind/soul through the senses can connect to music through the pleasant sound, inspiring/encouraging lyrical content, engaging visual content which all these contributes to the therapeutic effects of music. Thank you for reading as comments and contributions are welcomed.
