The Role of Music in Schools(of my time)

Music forms a greater part of our daily lives. Just imagine a day without listening to music or a beat, you may not notice but it's very rare. In Africa, anything can be turned into music. Even a teaspoon can be used as a drumstick while the mug would serve as a drum and a melodious song could be made. That's music for you, lolz. As an African person that I am, anything I would be saying here will be from experience since I was young.

I am a lover of music and everything in the arts. Since I was a child, I have dreamed of becoming a great and popular artist and I believe I can still achieve it. While I was in school, we learned so many songs and these songs had different roles and lessons to pass. Some of the songs were to help us better understand a concept, some to tell stories and some to build our morals as young and growing pupils, that was in Primary school though we still learned many songs in High School.
I would be discussing the different songs and lessons they taught me and my mates back then.

Back then in primary school, we(my mates and I) were bad at Maths especially when it comes to multiplication and division of numbers. Then our Maths teacher formed this song to help us understand the pattern of multiplication and division:

“One time One, One!!!
Two times Two, Four!!!
Three times Three, Nine!!!
Four times Four, Sixteen!!!”

This was made into a song and we often chorused it every day whenever the Maths teacher arrived in the classroom after a general welcome greeting.
This is a shorter version of the song, for division, our teacher also made a simple song too.

Then to tell us stories, our Literature/Writing teacher back in Primary School often ended her class by asking everyone to collectively chorus this song:

”There was a man(2x)
His name is Samson
He was bold
He was strong
He fought a lion
I'm bold
I'm strong
I'll be like him
I'll better him”( The full song ×2)

Those were the lyrics of the song and because of this song, I can never forget this story even over my fifties.

Lastly, I would love to also share the song which was meant to boost our personal discipline and moral behavior. The Nigerian National Anthem is the song that I sang the most when I was in Primary school as well as High school. The rest of the songs I shared were made by our teachers and could vary from those other songs used by other subjects' teachers in other schools. But for the National Anthem, it's a general song. Though the Anthem I sang back then in school has been changed by my leaders but I prefer the old National Anthem to the present. Here's the old anthem:

This is the new anthem. It's a good song with nice lyrics too, but I still prefer the former athem(the one above).

Here is the Nigerian National Anthem. It's a song every Nigerian student can sing even when asleep and it formed a greater experience for me back then in school.

In my primary school, Music was never a subject taught, it wasn't in the curriculum. But in high school, studying Music was made compulsory for everyone. I was trained in a Christian school, so the music types that we were exposed to were mainly gospel songs. We were also exposed to learning different musical instruments but I managed to master playing flute and recorder. I didn't complete my lessons on guitar playing before my graduation and I hope to complete it now in the higher institution.

Music is life. It's a gift to many areas of life. Many industries can't do without music. Let's talk about Movie Industries, music is the “spice” of every movie. If you think that's not so, leave a comment.
