It was one of the photography "projects", which i did as a volunteer. In other words, no one paid me for this work. My friend called me and asked if i would like to attend him and to photograph the boxing fights challenges at evening. I responded with immediate "YES" even without ask about the payment cos it was absolutely clear that no one will pay. At least this time.
My friend photographed these monthly fights already few times and as i got absolutely for free, but the experience, the adrenalin, the images we got - all was worth it - 3 hours of the intense photography in very busy space and not too good for the boxing photography light.
Additionally, at the next day i spent a few hours on the images post processing. I'm usually very fast in this process, so it took just two hours to select 600 images from 800 photographed, to edit them very slightly, to upload to some shared cloud and to send the link to the friend, who was in the touch of the manager of the fightings.
They loved my works and even asked me to attend the next month and to photograph them again, but.
The fight are organized by the city hall, and they don't pay for any activity they organize. In the next day i found a lot of my images freely circulating on IG and FB without any allusion to who photographed these photographs. And i hate to put my signature my images. Sure, i add all the possible metadata to every image EXIF - my email address, my web site and the copyright data. But IG and FB removes all this and makes the images naked from all the internal data. Such a pity.
So. My reflections now are - should i go next time again for the free photography session? Don't get my wrong. I do this kind of the free activity and volunteering all the time. At least 60% of my projects on order are free of charge. I can afford this - i have a job not connected to photography. But, my thoughts are about something different. These people will always try to find someone doing this job for free. And the city hall, behaving like a mafia in charge, will never pay for these who not their friends, family or having something for their interests.
What do you think, my friends? Should we continue to feed them?
Or we need just to concentrate on our volunteer work for the kids and teenagers, attending these challenges and waiting for these photographs ?
