Hip-pop genre of music is one of the wildest and most accepted genre of music, it has really produced acts like Tu-Pac, Biggie, J Cole, and many name if I continue to mention I wouldn’t be able to write this little piece of information I want to pass across
Hip-pop which is known as Rap had it significant all over the world, Nigeria was doing great in the genre, although our general music genre is the afrobeat, because it had it roots from Africa,
The Rap culture in Nigeria really dominated from the 1999 to 2013, the genre was really doing good at that time, acts like Ruggedman, Modenine, Eldee, Idris Abdulkareem, Iceprince, Vector, Jessjags,SDC( show Dem camp) took rap music to another level.
Ice prince was the first rap artist from African and Nigerian to Win a BET Award in 2013, with the hits single Oleku.
At that time some of our big afro beats artist like Davido and Wizkid once started as a rapper, but it later turned out that was never their way of music.
You can see how Hip-pop was popping in Nigeria
Vector still remains the only Nigerian and African Rapper with the longest freestyle, he freestyled for 2hours stretch without stopping, these are people who held the game down.
At the long run, the genre started loosing it scene, maybe due to Lack of investment, and other factors, those who were talented who knows how to rap and sing switched totally into singing, or those who rap only had to struggle to maintain Fame, some due to good management and consistency, and endorsement from big organization kept them at the top.
New School Rapper (Story so Far)
The likes of Ycee, Ladipoe, Blaqbonez,Alpha Ojini, payper Corleone. This new school rappers they gave rap a new look in Nigeria but it was in the era where rap was really not doing much, they became known, reason why I tagged them “new school Rappers” because the swag, contents were much better, the use of internet had an impact on their career, despites the odds of hip-pop they came out popping,
Mine you Ladipoe 2 years ago was nominated for the BET Awards
Payper Corleone had a collection of stream singles over a billion stream on all platforms.
This is an encouraging news for the rap community in Nigeria.
Hennessey majorly have brought out acts, through their annual Hennessey cypher classes were rappers from every corners of Nigeria will go head to head in other to find a winner, they have been consistent for over 10years, just imagine other organization, investors, comes into the rap community in Nigeria it will turn out good, this community needs more assistance, resources.
It will reduce the rate at which Rappers switched side, in other to known and earn a living.
I know they are many issues I haven’t touched pertaining Hip-Pop in Nigeria story so far,
I could remember the other when Wizkid tagged Rap as dead, he may be right from his own perspective
If two individuals were be presented for a label to sign an afro beat artist and a Hip-Pop artist, majority label owner will choose the afrobeats artist over the other
What Wizkid meant from my own point of view is that, the genre lacks encouragement, support and lack of sponsorship.
Kudos to Hennessey celebrating hip-pop in Africa and around the world.
