This is a hike we took recently in Avalon, California, which is a town located on Santa Catalina Island. This island, though part of Los Angeles County, is 22 miles off of the coast of mainland California. My son and I hiked the Garden to Sky Summit Trail. At the top, on a clear day, one can look east and see ("overland") Orange County, California. Turning west, one can see San Nicolas Island, which is home to a naval facility. All in all, it is a beautiful and moderately strenuous hike. If you plan on taking this hike, be sure to first obtain a permit, which can be obtained online for free through Catalina Island Conservancy (https://www.catalinaconservancy.org/).
We had to walk to the trailhead by way of the town of Avalon. That was about a two-mile walk for us, one way. The Garden to Sky Summit trail is almost five miles with some elevation gain.
