Mariam Mullen – ID: 6748 - Back Story

One day, Mariam broke a mirror. She didn't do it on purpose, of course. She was simply cleaning it and the object slipped through her hands, falling to the ground and breaking into a thousand pieces.

She headed off to find a bag to clean up the mess. She began to put the small parts together and when was about to take the larger piece, saw her reflection wave to her. Mariam was so scared that she dropped the mirror again, breaking it again. At that moment, her reflection came out of the mirror and took her by the arms, pulling her.

Before she could do anything, Mariam was inside the mirror. In the reflected world. Everything was upside down. What should have been on the left, was on the right; the words were all mirrored and even the colors seemed wrong.

"Why did you do that?" she asked her reflection.
“Because it's fun,” her other self answered.

Mariam looked on the ground, to see if she could retrieve the piece of mirror through which she had entered to return to her world, but she didn't see it anywhere.

“You won't be able to come back,” told her reflection. "Not until I say so."

"Why?" she asked Mariam again.

"I need you to do something."

The mirrored Mariam beckoned her to follow her. They both walked for a while until they reached a business where they sold glasses. Her reflection entered the room.
"What's this?"

“No glasses work here, because everything is backwards,” the reflection explained. "But you're from the straight world, so you can surely fix it."
"What? But what are you saying? I don't know anything about glasses!”

“But you are straight! That's enough!" the mirror Mariam took her arm and pulled her toward the back of the optician's.

There, Mariam could see all the glasses there were and, as her reflection had said, they were all backwards. "Why do I have to do it?"

"Only someone from the straight world can do it."

Maraim sighed and walked over to the crystals. She didn't understand much about glasses, she had only worn them her whole life, she had never made them.
"Do you have any books on optics?"

“Yes, there,” her reflection pointed to a book. Mariam took it and to her surprise the words were spelled correctly. "I brought it from your world, that's why I can't read it."
"Oh, I understand."

Maraim then began to read and study. She didn't know how much time passed, but when she finished the book, she felt that she was already an expert, so she managed to fix all the glasses that were in the optics.

"Can I go back now?" she asked her reflection.
The mirror Mariam shrugged. "As you like."

Mariam looked at herself in the mirror that was there for people to try on their glasses. She stood up and touched it. Before she knew it she was back at her house.

The mirror was still broken on the floor. Her reflection looked back at her and winked. She adjusted her glasses and thought that she now had a new job. After all, she already knew everything about optics, now she had to put it into practice.
