[en] Tips for growing Huernia. My favorite group of succulents

Hello Hivers passionate about succulent plants. In today's article I want to share with you tips for growing succulents of the Huernia genus in the garden. This plant group is one of my favorites because there are thousands of varieties with a high variability in flowers with wonderful color patterns and sizes. In addition, they are my main work as a botanist where I take many Huernias for genetic improvement through controlled pollinations and future selection. I hope these tips are very useful to you.

Growing Tips

Lightning:

It is recommended that this group of plants be grown in an area with good lighting but that they do not receive direct midday sun. The summer sun can burn the stems very quickly.

Temperature:

They prefer cool to warm temperatures in the range of 24⁰C-30⁰C. Do not expose them to temperatures below 5⁰C for long periods.

Substratum:

Use a light soil that allows rapid drainage of irrigation water and dries quickly. They grow optimally on commercial substrates for succulents and cacti.

Irrigation frequency:

Irrigate preferably when the stems feel slightly dehydrated. In this way we reduce rot and fungal attacks.

Plagues and diseases:

Mainly affected by mealybugs (mainly mealy and scaly), mites, aphids, insect larvae, mollusks and pathogenic fungi.

Multiplication:

Very easy from sections of stems that root within a few days. There are exceptions that take weeks to root.
