[en] Grow succulents of the genus Faucaria in a simple way

Hello Hivers growers or lovers of the wonderful world of succulent plants. Today's cultivation summary is going to be dedicated to a small genus of succulents in the Aizoaceae family known as Faucaria. This genus has less than 10 known species and is commonly grown as collection plants. They are generally small plants that form a rosette of fleshy leaves on a very short stem. These leaves are arranged in pairs and have generally spatulate edges and some cylindrical protuberances similar to thorns. Over time, they develop numerous offspring to form very compact colonies. The flowers are usually very showy with a size of +/- 2.5 cm and generally yellow.

Below are two representatives of the genus Faucaria in the collection:

To grow Faucarias, the following aspects need to be taken into account:

  • Indirect exposure to sunlight to avoid burns on the leaves.
  • Water every 5-7 days if temperatures above 24⁰C prevail.
  • Use a 60-70% mineral substrate to allow rapid drainage of irrigation water.
  • Temperatures that are between 22⁰C-28⁰C during most of the year. Do not expose to temperatures below 5⁰C.
  • Attacked by mealybugs, aphids, mites, mollusks and pathogenic fungi.
