In this, fifth episode of the Injured Badger Hole Adventures, I combine two days at the sett of the injured badger. On day five, I start with a deer encounter on the way to the badger hole, I roll a crab apple into the burrow but don't add any new food to the cardboard box.
That food has been eaten exclusively by the rats and they are neither injured nor otherwise deprived so they really don't need that extra food. And I don't want to spoil them too much because winter is coming so they need to stay alert and active in order to survive.
I then find a pair of twisted deer horns (antlers) and wonder how I didn't see them before.
On day six I talk to the woodpecker who follows me around when I'm in the area, but still stays high up on the trees where it's difficult to film him. Unfortunately, since last seen injured, there has been no sign whatsoever of the badger and the reality that he may not have made it sets in ever so strong.
I feel saddened by this, but remain focused and determined to keep checking on him with the last of hope I have that he's still, against all odds, somehow alive. The trail camera was a little higher up on the tree than before, so the food box was outside of its field of view. The rats were having a blast nonetheless.
As a background music for the trail cam footage I used my own solo which was inspired by solos from a song by a Slovakian band Tublatanka and a German band Destruction. The solo was recorded live. It’s not a studio recording.
