Funiculi Funicula: Before The Coffee Gets Cold

Hello book lovers…

This time I want to retell the contents of the book that I just finished. This book is a book that has been adapted into a film with the same title. I was interested in reading the book because I was curious whether the filmmakers adapted it correctly. Okay, let me tell you what the contents of this book are.

Funiculi Funicula: Before The Coffee Gets Cold

This book tells the story of a miracle in a coffee shop. This coffee shop can take someone back in time to meet their loved ones, but there are many rules that bind them. Café owner Nagare and his wife, Kei, have helped many people who want to go back to the past but say that going back to the past will not change the present. Nagare and Kei said before the person returned to the past that nothing would change. However, that person will still go to the past even though nothing will change after they return to the past. And they have to drink their coffee before the coffee gets cold, because if not, they can't back.

In this book, there are several people who go to the past with different stories. Previously untold stories, through the journey of the past, they find many facts that eventually change them in the future.

My Review:

This book is so famous that I am interested in reading it. In addition, the film is very interesting to watch, so I also want to read the book. In my opinion, this book has an interesting theme. Going to the past and changing the future is everyone's dream. However, this book does not give great hope about the present. Although this book is fantasy fiction, what it tries to convey is very real, namely: Nothing will change in the future even though you have gone to the past.

This book has four parts where each part deals with relationships between people. However, since I have only read Japanese fiction books, I had difficulty identifying the gender of each character. Even though they mentioned their names, I couldn't identify their gender. Maybe because the author also explained it gradually. I even had difficulty visualizing what the coffee shop was like.

Each story that will be discussed, there will be another character as an intro where in the next chapter their story will be told. Even though this book tells about people and their relationships, the author failed to bring to life a story that makes my heart touched. I can't feel sad when a character here loses a loved one. It feels so bland and numbness.

I rated this first book as 3 from 5 stars. I still have a big expectation about the second book.
