Mogilev Town Hall - Symbol of Freedom

Many cities have a unique architectural symbol and landmarks. One of the pride of the large city of Mogilev is the ancient town hall. It is located in the historical center of the city. Currently, there are several similar buildings in Belarus. In 1577, Mogilev received the Magdeburg right, which made this city self-governing and independent of the feudal lords. The next year, in 1578, the construction of the city hall began as a symbol of the independence of the city. Initially, the town hall building was wooden and was repeatedly destroyed. But in 1679, the townspeople initiated the construction of a stone town hall, but of brick, which has survived to this day. The building was built in neoclassical style.

This is a unique historical building that was popular with important personalities. For example, in 1780, Empress Catherine II and the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph II liked to use the observation deck of the town hall. Many experts say that the Mogilev City Hall is one of the best works of Belarusian civil architecture of the 17th century. Nearby is another historical building that plays the role of the registry office and is also a city landmark.

The tower has eight sides and five tiers. The height together with the spire is 46 meters. Due to the fact that this is one of the highest points in Mogilev, the bathhouse can be seen from far corners of the city. On the front side there is a clock that notifies residents of the change of time. An observation deck has been preserved on the tower, but in winter it is closed to the public.

Currently, the town hall serves as a landmark and museum. However, the building is closed on the other side. This is not the front part, but it looks personable.

I was lucky and the museum was open on New Year's holidays. This means that access to the interior decoration and premises of the Mogilev City Hall was available for tourists. In order to get to the main premises, a high spiral staircase awaited us. In front of her on the tile is an inscription that reads the same from different sides.

On the second floor there is a ticket office and an entrance to all the premises of the town hall. Each room is a historical value in which there are antique interior items and moments of history. The exhibits are made very realistically, which sometimes seemed to enter the room not to the sculptures, but to real people. Great atmosphere.

Most of all I liked the miniature that shows the process of building the town hall. It depicts figures of people and models of buildings of ancient times. In fact, one of the frames of history is depicted here. To do this is painstaking, but noble work.

Among other things, the walls of the town hall house the restored interior of the rooms, antiques, paintings and even a model of the ancient city.

photo1642509334 (1).jpeg It was the eve of Orthodox Christmas, and therefore there was a Christmas tree in the middle of the room.

The City Hall of Mogilev looks impressive. At first glance, this building does not look majestic, but after reading the history of its existence, I was impressed. To this day, the Mogilev City Hall remains the main symbol of the city - a symbol of independence. This historic building is a place of attraction in any weather and any season. I hope you enjoyed the virtual acquaintance with the Mogilev Town Hall.
