Today there are more Hot Wheels models than real cars in the world, with an estimated 4 billion+ toy cars in existence!
These small scale die-cast steel cars have been filling up little boys' pockets for more than fifty years! There were 16 cars in the original Hot Wheels lineup, and they were all based on an actual customised vehicle. Since then, many automobile manufacturers have worked with Mattel/Hot Wheels to create tiny models of their cars. There detailing is top notch thanks to manufacturers lending their designs and blueprints to the toy makers.
The Hot Wheels franchise is enormous, spanning far further than the original car models. There have been tracks, battery powered cars, accessory kits, and many collectible lines. While still a popular choice for children, there are also many adults that grew up loving the toys and have since become collectors. To celebrate Hot Wheels' four billionth car produced, they created a diamond studded model worth $140,000 with over 2,000 diamond chips and ruby tail lights. Zoom!
