There is Confusion Around AGI and I don't Get It Too

source

I myself do not fully understand AGI and I've been reading about AI for at least well over a year. Artificial general intelligence, AGI for short has become a very a hot topic in the tech industry right now and the famous pioneers of AI technology are starting to pay attention to it. But the funny thing is that even experts are not sure what it really means so I don't feel like a dummy not understanding it because I don't consider myself as an AI expert at all.

I think I'll consider myself as a tester for AI rather than an expert.

Fei-Fei Li who is a well-known AI researcher, recently admitted that she does not understand AGI either. I was rudely shocked to hear that because I see her as someone well-versed in all things AI and even she wa clueless about this.

So I thought to myself, if even experts are confused, how can we expect the public to grasp this concept?

Li’s work has been crucial in AI development. She helped create ImageNet, which changed how machines learn. Yet, when asked about AGI, she showed the world that she's as clueless as I am right now. Different groups define AGI in many ways. Some see it as a system that can do most tasks better than humans. Others believe it should function like a good human coworker and I support that opinion rather than the former.

Addressing this particular confusion matters because as we develop AI, we need clear definitions and goals. Without this, we may face more questions than answers. Instead of rushing to create AGI which I know Elon Musk with his new xAI so desperately wants to impress the world, we should focus on understanding what it truly means. This way, we can build technology that benefits everyone.
