A Call of Death

If I had known what would follow, I would never have taken that call; hell I would never have paid for that cabin. Every time I think about it, I can't help wondering what all of it meant. It has taken the better part of my past two years to answer that question. Still, I am as close to it, as I was that day.

It had been two whole years since we last had anything that might pass as a vacation. Not that Jamie noticed, as he was mostly consumed by his work. I could quite understand because his colleague, Bradley, still had time for his family.

My mom used to tell me before I got married that it takes more than love to sustain a happy married life. I always countered thus "In a place of love, there can be no wrong, and if there is no wrong, there is no pain". I was beginning to wish I had listened.

From time to time, I started catching myself thinking about Ola (my last ex before Jamie. For all his many faults, being present and paying a woman wasn't one of them, and neither was it a problem for Jamie at the beginning. I wasn't going to keep thinking about my ex while my husband was still alive.

I decided to plan a surprise vacation for us. He was surprisingly receptive to it. That was we ended up at the cabin in the woods close to the waters. It was meant to be a week-long vacation. The cabin was a bit more run-down than it appears in the ad. The wooden frame was a bit rickety. I did notice the wood polishing was fading, but who cares?

It seems to be working. We seem to have found our spark again. There I was looking at this perfect build of a man that I call my husband, with his tame demeanour. His full beard did have a way of turning me on. I couldn't help thinking about last night when we had a good time. I could help but notice his gentle ways with me, his effort at listening. I could see all the reasons I chose her.

It was a new day, literally, and for my marriage. If only I knew what it had in store for me. There was something in the air that just made me know it was a special day. We were outside taking in the fresh morning air. Grrrrr….grrrr.grrrr.. A phone rang. I didn't even notice there was a phone in the cabin. I walked into the cabin, and there was a worn-out phone by the side of the door to the cabin.

"Hello," I said into the mouthpiece. "Mrs. Meron, we have come to collect," he said. Collect what? Who are you?? I replied. Click, click. With that, came a loud bang! and the lifeless body of Jamie tumbled off the rocking chair he was sitting on.

To date, on the day of every month, I still go there, hoping the phone will ring again and maybe I will get some answers.
