The Burden Within |- The Ink Well Fiction Prompt #123

In the ancient town of Laska, the town is known for its picturesque beauty, which tells tales of the past. Ancient buildings and art galleries lined the corners of the street. The town buzzed with energy as everyone hurried to meet up with their daily activities.

In this ancient town lived a woman named Arianna. A talented woman with brownish hair, big freckles on her cheeks, and cat-like blue eyes, these beauties and her charisma attract lots of people to her. Coupled with this is her distinctive ability to recall her past memories and those of others. The ability to delve into the memories of others and relive them with full understanding caused the Laska residents to visit her like a plague.

Her signature is a flowing, sparkling white gown; this is what thousands know her by, which they believe has a deep connection with her remarkable ability. People travel from far and near to seek understanding of their own long and forgotten lives. In order to connect to these people's souls and air their curiosity to them, she gently holds their palms with her eyes closed. With the feeling of being connected, she transports them back to their long-forgotten memories.

Yet, in the midst of her unique talent, she lives daily with her own troubles—a haunting memory that has refused to let her have peace of mind. She regretted her actions daily, a memory that leaves her with an unceasing moment of guilt. She wanted to right her wrongs, revisit her past mistakes, and find a sense of peace and comfort.

One day, while taking a walk in the bustling town, she met a man sitting under a tree with his hands on his chin. It was clearly written all over his face that something wasn't right. As they sighted themselves, there was an unspoken understanding that passed between them, which was like a magnet. Their desire for peace brought them closer as Arianna walked to the man sitting in one of the sculptures at the center of the town.

"I greet you. I am Arianna, and I feel we both have something in common."

"Hahahaha. I don't know what you mean by we do have something in common. Would you mind explaining what you mean?"

"I have the power to recall one's past experience. Would you mind if I embark on a journey of discovery with you?"

"Sure. I hope you do find something that will lift the guilt you feel. It's written all over you; only those with eyes can see."

Arianna felt a pang of sadness as the memories flashed before her, but she refused to let anything show. Immediately, as she joined her palms together with the man, she felt a magnetic force. Arianna's ability, which she had used to guide others, refused to work. The weight of her past mistakes was a blockage to her soul. This conflict was the only way for her hidden fear to be revealed. While this was going on, passersby were all staring. She began the confession, which had been buried in her for ages.

"I have been guiding everyone to recall their past memories, but I have been living for years with a guilt that I can't say publicly. I feel a strong guilt in me, and I hope everyone listening to me will find a spot to forgive me."

As she was talking, the passersby were all glancing at her with a very confused stare. All stopped to listen to her confession, as many thought she was losing it.

"I have been cursed by my very own grandfather before his departure. He narrated a dream of how he met a man who instructed him to come to me to tell him all he needed to know about his lost glory. Then, I never knew I had the talent of seeing others' past life experiences. My grandpa was the reason behind my self-discovery, as he told me everything he was told in the dream. How to connect with people and recall their past. After I gained all the needed knowledge, I became stingy with it and refused to help my grandpa with his quest. My refusal brought about broken relationships, lost love, and faded hope. On the day of his last breath, he left me with nothing meaningful but, "You will help others discover their path, but your path will be nothing but pain, sorrow, and restlessness." I never knew these words would have an effect on my life until the first day I used the talent. Have mercy, grandpa."

Immediately after she finished her confession, the magnetic force holding her palm to that of the man disconnected, and the man disappeared. The passersby heard her confession and learned a great lesson from her mistake, which was added to the town's history book. She found peace immediately after her confession. She realized the man was the spirit of her late grandpa, as she was the only one who saw the old man, which left the passersby thinking she had lost it.
