The drop in the window (story)

The man sat on the couch, tears on the verge of bursting. Loneliness and sadness, like hot plastic, clung to his body. The cold and the rain, which were running around the outside of the house, worsened his mood.

The man stared out the window, watching his world fall apart piece by piece. With his fingers, he wrote in the air, as if trying to capture something that escaped him.

Drops of water slid down the glass with parsimony, and the sound of their fall was the background music of a melancholic painting. Suddenly, one drop in particular caught his attention.

It was a large, round, shiny drop that refused to fall. The man stood gawking at it. He was mesmerized by its movement.
The droplet seemed to have a life of its own, it gave the impression of fighting, slowly and even gracefully.

It crossed to the right, stopped, then to the left, and, as if someone was pushing it, it moved little by little, resisting falling.

As the drop approached the ground, the man began to feel a strange sensation. It was as if something was slipping out of him,
as if a part of him was breaking away.

The drop reached the end of the glass and refused to fall to the ground. The man felt a stabbing pain in his heart. It was as if the drop had a part of him.

Startled, he got up from the couch and walked to the window. He stared at the drop, hoping that it would not have the fate of the other drops.

It encouraged him not to fall, demanded that he not fall. Her tears disappeared and were replaced by an expression of determination.

Already at the window he held out his hand. The drop, as if waiting for that gesture, dropped. He grasped it carefully and looked at it tenderly.

"Don't go away," he told her. "Stay with me." There were no words, no movements. The drop was in the man's palm, and he felt it vibrate with life.

It was as if the drop was talking to him, as if it were transmitting a message. The man felt a warmth in his heart. A warmth he had not felt in a long time.

His face lit up. A smile slowly crept across his face.

"I'll call you Hope," he told her, as he brought it to his mouth. The drop glowed with a green flash of light, manifesting his delight at the name and at the gesture. Then it disappeared.
