Deep
No don't run away, I am not going to go deep into your soul, or into the metaphysics of the universe. By deep I just mean within the musical spectrum. The deep voice of every musical performance the bass.
I am way late to try our #TTT which stands for #ThreeTuneTuesday challenge run by the master @ablaze . As you can see by the tag it is a Tuesday challenge and we are in Thursday now (in fact I have started Friday too) I was going to skip this week due to lack of time, but I ended up reading @steevc's entry @steevc/three-tune-tuesday-girls-just-wanna-play-drums
Bass
I am all about that bass, about that bass, no treble
I love the bass, though the normal medium I listen to, my phone, attenuates it quite a bit. Bass done right makes the song shine, and done wrong can kill any beat. I keep trying to learn it but still a long way to go. And as expected I have a lot of Bass Heroes starting with Victor Wooten and James Jamerson and adding Sting, Flea and many many more to the list.
However in the true spirit of #TTT I will stick to 3 bass players here, though they are random picks from my all time greats.
If there was one man who would go full on aggressive on the bass, while still standing nochalantly unlike Flea, it has to be the great John Entwistle. His sound is the bedrock of all their songs. I was initially going to put one of their isolated bass YouTube video here, but decided to put a normal complete song instead. His bass is powerful enough to come through all songs anyways. But do check out the isolated pieces on Youtube to really see his prowess. The song I chose was "Baba O'Riley". Probably he has even more complex bass patterns in other songs but you can see how his bass is fundamental to that powerhouse sound of The Who.
Lint
Let's talk about a modern miracle now - I present to you Mr. Joe Dart!!! I believe his nickname in the group is Dean, but I loved what an anonymous Redditor jokingly called him - "Lint". Why? He is like Lint cause he is so deep in the pocket ;D
And the group is explosive - do check them out Vulfpeck! For your listening pleasure I have chosen my bass favorite from their discography - Dean Town ( a tribute to the other bass master Jaco Pastorius and his Teen Town)
Check out Live At Madison Gardens concert, the entire version is uploaded on YouTube by the band themselves and absolutely lovely.
And now - here's presenting - Dean Town!!!
How does one know the bass is great! When your fans can vocalize your bass licks verbatim :) For some more of his funky bass check out the bonus at end of the post.
Ellen
Ellen is a young girl who started learning to play bass during the pandemic from her musician father. She clearly has talent, but has put in hours of work from the age of 8. Using Yousician she has been practicing for at least 2 hours every day. And the results show. Whatever they put up on the YouTube is fantastic. There are some beautiful original numbers by her father, great covers, Yousician tunes etc. I was going to put either Bootsy or Steve Harris as my last choice, but I reckon most of you know them and their tunes. So instead I went with Ellen and her YouTube channel "Ellen Plays Bass" cause these are the stars of tomorrow.
Here's one of her videos playing on top of a Yousician lesson ( Good tune). Check out her competence on a fretless five string bass! (And here I started before her and still haven't got beyond pentatonic scales)
Hope
The hope is mine, to use all this music to push myself to pick up the bass and start learning again!!!
Encore
Don't worry I did not forget about the bonus track for Joe Dart. Here, check out another funky solo by him.
Enjoy the depths of bass y'all!!! Rock on!
