Dutch guilders
In February, I wrote about finding a Dutch 2,5 Guilder on the flea market. If you didn't read it and are curious, here's the post. After that find, I got a little nostalgic and wanted to see if there were more of these older coins that I personally used to pay for things before the Euro was introduced.
Lots of coins for sale
In terms of Dutch guilders, I had plenty to choose from on a local online market. I was mostly looking to find a 5 Guilder piece because I remember how rich I always felt when I had one of these in my hands and my grandmother used to collect them in a little box as savings. Whenever one of us (the kids) would get these, we felt like we could buy the whole candy shop around the corner, haha. Back in these days, you could buy a lot from just 5 Guilders. How times have changed!
Lots of dirty coins
Where I found tons of coins looking horrible, I was trying to find a few of them looking a bit less worn because the design of these old Dutch guilders surely weren't the reason to buy them. I was simply looking for some memories to hold in my collection and not because I thought they would be very valuable at some point in the future. Call it just a little Dutch sentiment, not just for me, but also to share stories with my kids when they are older. Who knows maybe one day they completely disappear, so at least I want to have a few of them in my collection.
A nice looking set
Although it was not a set of 10 and 25 cents, 1 guilder and 5 guilders, I found one with 2 "kwartjes as we call them in Dutch" (quarters) aka 25 cents from different years as well as a good looking 1 and 5 guilder coin. The guy only asked 1,50 euros for the set which to me was fair even if they may be worth less, I didn't care. Sadly he cancelled the sale first because he told me he wasn't able to ship anything. I asked him to reserve them for me and let me know when he could so I would buy them later. He agreed and some weeks later he reached out to me if I still wanted them.
A British Pound
As I was going to have shipping fees anyway, I figured I might as well check if he has something more I would like to have. There was one listing with 2 different pounds and one of them was from my birth year. Although it looks quite bad, I also bought this one for sentiment as it reminds me of the time that I went to London with my mother and had to pay 1 whole pound in Harrods to go to the toilet. We surely didn't have much money and paying 3,5 guilders (that was the rate at the time) for just a visit to the toilet was insane and I never forgot that.
I like this younger Elizabeth on the coin much better than the older one, if I may say so :)
Which side do you like best?
What's written on the side?
"Nemo Me Impune Lacessit" which I had to translate and then translate again (lol):
I didn't capture the full thing on camera, I realized today but I looked it up to find out what it says.
Just a few fun coins
To add to my collection and I have to be honest, I didn't even check them for errors because I have a whole bunch of circulated Euros which I divided into countries and will dig into first so I have a better understanding of what to look out for in terms of receiving euro coins change without having to hold on to all of them for too long.
Bank notes
I think I will look out for old Dutch guilder bank notes as well because I'd like to have a collection of the coins and banknotes I used to pay with myself just for fun. I have not seen many of them yet, but then again, I have not really directly searched for them either.
Let's see if I manage to find them locally, I think it's possible considering the number of Dutch coins I've already held in my hands while going to flea markets only.
Thanks for stopping by, wishing you a great day!
