Looking back...
9/11 Attack : Invasion of Iraq
After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, the U.S. government, led by President George W. Bush, initiated the "War on Terror." In 2003, the U.S. and its allies, including the United Kingdom, launched the Iraq War, claiming Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and links to terrorism.
The invasion led to the toppling of Saddam Hussein's regime. However, no substantial WMDs were found, and the war was highly controversial, leading to significant geopolitical and humanitarian consequences, including a prolonged conflict and sectarian tensions in Iraq.
The Iraq War was highly controversial, and there is still much debate about its justification. The Bush administration claimed that Iraq had WMDs and was linked to al-Qaeda, but no evidence of either claim was ever found. The war also resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians and destabilized the region.
The US withdrew its troops from Iraq in 2011, but the country remains unstable. In 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) captured large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria. The US and its allies launched a military campaign against ISIS in 2014, which eventually led to the defeat of the group in 2017.
