OFCOM reports that the average adult internet user in the U.K. spent 3 hours 59 minutes per day online across all devices in September 2021 (the latest available national level data), with younger people spending far more time online...
While I don't personally track my own time online, I know it's a lot more than the average for my age group, and also a lot more than the peak-users in their 20s, mainly because I have a tracker running on my MacBook - (NB I didn't know this until now I just checked!)
My own daily average is nearer 7-8 hours a day...
And that's excluding the mobile phone, add at least another hour a day for that.
This isn't something that surprises me or worries me as I work online, then there's Hive, then there's various other social and shopping activities!
However what has been worrying me recently was the state of the desktop on my main work computer...
I mean I'm sure everyone's seen worse, but I decided a couple of days back that 'enough's enough' and gave it a little tidy up.
i got rid of all the junk I'd just dumped on the desktop, either deleted or moved to one of the existing folders, and consolidated some folders into others too.
Now I've got my main blog stuff on the left and admin and Hive to the right.
I've also fallen back on an age old technique of having a folder entitled 'from desktop December 2022, and then in January I'll create a new one for Jan and shove the December one in that.
I think the one rogue screen capture outside of a folder was relevant to the post I had on the go at the time.
I haven't actually deleted that much it's just about organisation
Tidy Desktop, Tidy Mind...?
This little tidy up has most definitely had an immediate impact - I was more up for work today than I've been in a while, more focused and oragnised and productive.
I think it was so worth spending just 15 minuutes having a little sort out as it's made me calmer and more methodical when writing new material, now it's just a matter of keeping on top of the junk that all too easily just ends up on the desktop.
And hopefully I'll get around to sorting out the excess junk in all of those subfolders.
The work sub folders are the worst - just too many duplicate files, but at least I know I have copies of everything I've done since I thought this computer back in November 2018.
Now it's just a matter of keeping on top of it for maximum productivity!
I don't mind letting it go a bit - with material for ongoing blogposts lined up in themes...
But even with only 10 files on display it's back to a little messy again.
I guess I just need to put up with it, short term, and then do a clearance at least three times a week.
For now, it's nice to being back to being tidy!
