Cuando vi el poster de esta película, pensé que iba a ser la típica de un grupo de jóvenes acampando en el bosque, y un asesino de la zona iba a acabarlos uno por uno de forma sangrienta y descabellada. Cuando leí un poco de qué trataba, me di cuenta que estaba muy equivocado, ya que es eco-horror y aunque sí transcurre en un bosque, no tiene ni una pizca de lo que imaginé en un principio. Luego pensé que iba a ser el bosque con vida propia asesinando gente que daña el ecosistema, creando ambientes hostiles y usando todo tipo de artimañas para deshacerse de los humanos. ¿Estará acertado mi segundo pensamiento sobre la película?
When I saw the poster for this movie, I thought it was going to be typical of a group of young people camping in the woods, and a local killer was going to finish them off one by one in a bloody and crazy way. When I read a little about what it was about, I realized that I was very wrong, since it is eco-horror and although it does take place in a forest, it does not have a bit of what I imagined at first. Then I thought it was going to be the forest with a life of its own, killing people who damage the ecosystem, creating hostile environments and using all kinds of tricks to get rid of humans. Is my second thought about the movie correct?

Esta película se ajusta un poco a la realidad que vivimos, porque transcurre en el tiempo en que un virus mortal azota el planeta (COVID, ¿eres tú?) y los humanos se encuentran en cuarentena y tomando altas previsiones para el contacto humano (trajes especiales, tapabocas, miles de pruebas para saber si está libre de virus...). La película empieza con el protagonista, el científico Martin Lowery, llegando a una zona boscosa donde debe adentrarse para ayudar en la investigación de la dra. Olivia, una amiga muy cercana.
Directed by the englishman Ben Wheatley, In the earth was released in 2021. This film adjusts a bit to the reality we live in, because it takes place in the time when a deadly virus is hitting the planet (COVID, is that you?) and the humans are in quarantine and taking high precautions for human contact (special suits, face masks, thousands of tests to find out if it is free of viruses...). The film begins with the protagonist, the scientist Martin Lowery, arriving at a wooded area where he must enter to help in the investigation of Dr. Olivia, a very close friend.

Martin y Alma son interpretados por los ingleses Joel Fry y Ellora Torchia, respectivamente. Los dos otros personajes importantes son la dra. Olivia y Zach, interpretados por Hayley Squires y Reece Shearsmith, y los cuatro coinciden en una cosa: sus actuaciones estuvieron ok, no ofrecieron una gran actuación más allá de Zach, quien interpretó de forma correcta la locura y fanatismo que siente su personaje. En cuanto al soundtrack, es el típico de películas de horror para crear suspenso en ciertas escenas, pero no es algo destacable.
Martin and Alma are played by Englishmen Joel Fry and Ellora Torchia, respectively. The two other important characters are dr. Olivia and Zach, played by Hayley Squires and Reece Shearsmith, and the four of them agree on one thing: their performances were ok, they didn't offer a great performance beyond Zach, who correctly interpreted the madness and fanaticism that his character feels. As for the soundtrack, it is typical of horror movies to create suspense in certain scenes, but it is not something remarkable.

En cuanto a los efectos visuales, se abusó un poco de imágenes estroboscópicas y efectos caleidoscopio, además de iluminación excesiva y destellos violentos que podrían activar epilepsia en algún espectador, todo esto para simular lo que se siente el estar drogados, esta vez por esporas que desprenden ciertos hongos en el bosque por voluntad propia. Al principio es chévere, pero después me causó mareos porque intentaba descubrir qué podía ocultar y no perder nada de la trama para intentar darle sentido, lo cual nunca logré.
As for the visual effects, a bit of stroboscopic images and kaleidoscope effects were abused, as well as excessive lighting and violent flashes that could trigger epilepsy in some viewer, all this to simulate what it feels like to be drugged, this time by spores that they release certain mushrooms in the forest of their own free will. At first it's cool, but then it made me dizzy because I was trying to figure out what I could hide and not lose any of the plot to try to make sense of it, which I never did.
Si no les gustan las películas que no tienen un cierre o si les gusta entender todo lo que sucede, pues les recomiendo que no la vean. Empiezan a desarrollar una idea pero a mitad de película salta a otra, y cuando termina, no cierran ninguno de los dos argumentos. Si me dices que hay un virus en el mundo, al menos dime que van a tratar de conseguir la cura en el bosque y el mismo espíritu del bosque lo quiere impedir, o dime que el espíritu del bosque quiere comunicarse a través de un humano "seleccionado", pero no me mezcles las dos cosas y que al final no me termines de contar ni una ni la otra.
If you don't like movies that don't have a closure or if you like to understand everything that happens, then I recommend you don't watch it. They start to develop an idea but in the middle of the film it jumps to another, and when it ends, neither of the two arguments is closed. If you tell me that there is a virus in the world, at least tell me that they are going to try to get the cure in the forest and the spirit of the forest wants to prevent it, or tell me that the spirit of the forest wants to communicate through a human "selected", but do not mix the two things for me and that in the end you do not finish telling me one or the other.

Está presente el factor sobrenatural en cuanto hay una deidad del bosque involucrada indirectamente, que me hubiese gustado que lo involucraran más o hiciera apariciones así sea en el fondo al pasar la cámara para darle más misticismo al film, pero nada que ver. Pudo haber sido mucho mejor, claro que sí, pero también pudo haber sido peor, por lo cual se salva de ser un desastre total.
The supernatural factor is present as there is a deity of the forest indirectly involved, which I would have liked to be more involved or make appearances even in the background when the camera passes to give the film more mysticism, but nothing to see. It could have been much better, of course, but it could also have been worse, which is why it is saved from being a total disaster.

Esta película no fue hecha para que guste a todo el público que la vea, hay gente a la que le gustará mucho y a quienes les parezca una basura. He leído opiniones donde encontradas: a algunos le parece una película muy buena, a otros les parece bien porque los aleja del estereotipo actual de acción, carreras, balas y sangre; y a otros les parece una completa pérdida de tiempo. Dependerá completamente de tus gustos la aceptación que tengas sobre la película, todo esto si no te quedas dormido a mitad de película.
This movie was not made to be liked by all the public that sees it, there are people who will like it a lot and who think it is garbage. I have read mixed opinions: to some it seems like a very good movie, to others it seems good because it distances them from the current stereotype of action, racing, bullets and blood; and to others it seems like a complete waste of time. The acceptance you have of the film will depend entirely on your tastes, all this if you do not fall asleep in the middle of the film.

Esperaba un poco más de esta película, ya que solo sentí suspenso y horror en dos partes de la película pero por lo sorpresivo de lo que ocurre, pero no porque me hayan llevado poco a poco hasta ese estado. Como comenté, esta película no es para los que estén aburridos y quieran entretenerse, para ese mejor pónganse a ver TV, una serie u otra película que tengan pendiente.
I expected a little more from this film, since I only felt suspense and horror in two parts of the film but because of the surprise of what happens, but not because they have gradually brought me to that state. As I mentioned, this movie is not for those who are bored and want to be entertained, for that better start watching TV, a series or another movie that you have pending.
