The Blair Witch Project is one of the most important horror films of all time, pioneer of an entire subgenre that would later be exploited to the point of exhaustion with films like Paranormal Activity (The found footage) and created in a time where its particular marketing campaign of pretending that "everything was real" was feasible, considering that the internet was not yet so accessible, but at the same time technology had advanced enough that a group of teenagers could theoretically portray the events we are seeing onscreen.
I mention this because regardless of what we think of its execution, if there is something that works in favor of a film like this, it is analyzing the historical context in which it emerged, accustomed to much more traditional works that addressed terror in a more direct way (with some obvious exceptions).
The Blair Witch Project not only gave way to an entire aesthetic language, something that even today continues to influence creatives inside and outside of the seventh art (For example, video games like Slender that were so popular just a couple of years ago), Instead, it used minimalism and a lack of budget to find unorthodox routes to terror that ironically ended up imbuing it with timelessness.
And even given that the events shown in these brisk 80 minutes are acted, Heather's failed odyssey to investigate the truth behind the Blair Witch feels surprisingly intimate and realistic, something that could perhaps be driven by the insistence of the film crew in torturing them unexpectedly to extract "real reactions" from the leading actors.
The Blair Witch Project is raw, with all the good and bad that this entails, and it also knows how to close with one of the most disturbed and ambiguous climaxes in the history of cinema.

The Blair Witch Project es una de las películas de terror más importantes de todos los tiempos, pionera de todo un subgénero que más adelante se explotaría hasta el cansancio con filmes como Paranormal Activity (El found footage) y creada en una época en dónde su particular campaña de marketing de pretender que "todo fue real" era factible, considerando que el internet aún no era tan accesible, pero a la vez la tecnología había avanzado lo suficiente como para que un grupo de adolescentes pudiese en teoría retratar los eventos que estamos viendo en pantalla.
Menciono esto porque independientemente de lo que pensemos de su ejecución, si hay algo que juega a favor de una película como está es analizar el contexto histórico en el cual surgió, acostumbrada a obras mucho más tradicionales que abordaban el terror de forma más directa (Con algunas obvias excepciones).
The Blair Witch Project no solo dió paso a todo un lenguaje estético, algo que incluso en la actualidad sigue influyendo a creativos dentro y fuera del séptimo arte (Para muestra los vídeojuegos como Slender que fueron tan popular hace tan solo un par de años), sino que utilizaba el minimalismo y la falta de presupuesto para encontrar rutas poco ortodoxas al terror que irónicamente terminaron impregnandola de atemporalidad.
Y es que incluso comprendiendo que los eventos mostrados en estos ágiles 80 minutos son actuados, la odisea fallida de Heather por investigar la verdad oculta detrás de la bruja de Blair se siente sorprendentemente íntima y realista, algo que quizá pudiera estar impulsado por la insistencia del equipo de rodaje en torturarlos inesperadamente para extraer de los actores protagonistas "reacciones reales".
The Blair Witch Project es cruda, con todo lo bueno y malo que esto conlleva, y aparte sabe cerrar con uno de los climax más perturbada mente ambiguos de la historia del cine.
