El mundo del cine debe obligatoriamente evolucionar, tener nuevos protagonistas, personajes principales, icónicos que sean influyentes en nuevas generaciones; esta evolución no significa olvido para quienes dieron todo para crear o fortalecer un género, ya que por ser personajes inolvidables siempre estarán en la mente de guionistas y directores que buscarán cualquier manera de relatar una historia; un ejemplo de lo que he descrito lo podemos ver en personajes que fueron muy importantes en el comienzo de los films de terror; me refiero a "Drácula", "Frankenstein" y "El Hombre Lobo"; estos importantes antagonistas han influenciado tanto a la creación de otros icónicos personajes que cada vez en cuanto son traídos de vuelta al cine de una manera u otra y es por eso que en esta oportunidad hago reseña de un film que respeta lo hecho hace muchos años.
The world of movies must necessarily evolve, have new protagonists, main characters, iconic characters that are influential in new generations; this evolution does not mean forgetting those who gave everything to create or strengthen a genre, because as unforgettable characters they will always be in the minds of screenwriters and directors who will look for any way to tell a story; An example of what I have described can be seen in characters that were very important in the beginning of horror films; I am referring to "Dracula", "Frankenstein" and "The Wolf Man"; these important antagonists have influenced so much the creation of other iconic characters that every now and then are brought back to the cinema in one way or another and that is why this time I am reviewing a film that respects what was done many years ago.
Películas basadas en historias de Hombres Lobo siempre he pensado que son pocas y es que entre lo que considero "Los Monstruos Originales" son las que menos he visto aunque existe muchas producciones y es que pareciera que son las que tienen menos promoción y pareciera que son las tiene menos frecuencia en el cine, algo que no sucede como por ejemplo el vampirismo; a pesar de eso, películas como "An American Werewolf in London","The Howling", "Teen Wolf", "Wolf", "The Wolfman" y las últimas "Wolfwalkers" y "Werewolf by Night"; todas películas con historias realizadas desde un punto de vista diferente sobre lo que es un "Hombre Lobo" y justamente eso ocurre en "The Curses", film estrenado en el Sundance Film Festival el pasado año, pero que tuvo estreno en los cines Norteamericanos el pasado febrero de este año; en este film veremos la historia en dónde un Barón dueño de una tierra en una zona rural en Francia en el 1880 decide usar la violencia para erradicar de su tierra a un grupo de gitanos que se hacen llamar como los verdaderos dueños; a causa de tan vil y cobarde ataque; una mujer gitana maldice a todo aquel que participó en esa masacre condenados a sufrir, a ser perseguidos, cazados y mutilados por una bestia infernal; solo un hombre desde su sufrimiento podrá ser la respuesta para salvar a inocentes de las decisiones y ataques de monstruos.
Movies based on werewolf stories I have always thought that they are few and among what I consider "The Original Monsters" are the ones that I have seen the least although there are many productions and it seems that they are the ones that have less promotion and it seems that they are the ones that have less frequency in the cinema, something that does not happen as for example vampirism; in spite of that, movies like "An American Werewolf in London", "The Howling", "Teen Wolf", "Wolf", "Wolf", "The Wolfman" and the last "Wolfwalkers" and "Werewolf by Night"; all movies with stories made from a different point of view about what is a "Werewolf" and just that happens in "The Curses", film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year, but it was released in North American theaters last February of this year; in this film we will see the story where a Baron owner of a land in a rural area in France in 1880 decides to use violence to eradicate from his land a group of gypsies who call themselves as the true owners; because of such a vile and cowardly attack; a gypsy woman curses everyone who participated in this massacre condemned to suffer, to be persecuted, hunted and mutilated by an infernal beast; only a man from his suffering can be the answer to save innocents from the decisions and attacks of monsters.
Estas historias de Monstruos Originales tienen una serie de clichés que parece ser inevitable obviar; esto puede minimizar la originalidad en una producción, sea película o serie de TV, pero siempre he pensado en que todo dependerá de la manera en como se desarrolla la historia y que elemento debe acompañarla, hablo si es comedia, acción, terror, romance, cualquiera puede funcionar si por supuesto se hace todo bien. En este film que es dirigido y escrito por Sean Ellis y que en esta historia demuestra las consecuencias que padecen personas ajenas a un lamentable hecho. Al ver este film pensaba que Ellis tuvo mucha influencia en varias historias en dónde maldiciones afectan a una familia con primeramente advertencias que después se hacen más reales y violentos; al ver algunas escenas recordé películas como "The Conjurin" y "Sinester" y pienso que junto a "JAWS" fueron influyentes en este director y guionista; otro film que pude recordar a ver The Cursed fue uno de mis favoritos dentro de este género, "American Werewolf in London"; el diseño de la criatura en ese nuevo film tiene en parte similitud a la que aparece en la gran película estrenada en los 80' y posiblemente el director sea fan de ese film. Otro aspecto importante es las escenografías en dónde el predominio de colores como el negro, azul oscuro, marrón y el gris; creo que era justo mostrar que en el lugar donde se desarrolla la historia, no existe la luz del día y eso hace que todo sea frío, solitario, un lugar perfecto para una cacería despiadada.
These Original Monster stories have a series of clichés that it seems to be inevitable to avoid; this can minimize the originality in a production, be it movie or TV series, but I have always thought that everything will depend on the way the story is developed and what element should accompany it, whether it is comedy, action, horror, romance, any can work if of course everything is done right. In this film which is directed and written by Sean Ellis and in this story he demonstrates the consequences that people outside of an unfortunate event suffer. When watching this film I thought that Ellis had a lot of influence in several stories where curses affect a family with first warnings that later become more real and violent; when watching some scenes I remembered films like "The Conjurin" and "Sinester" and I think that together with "JAWS" they were influential in this director and screenwriter; another film that I could remember watching The Cursed was one of my favorites within this genre, "American Werewolf in London"; the design of the creature in that new film has in part similarity to the one that appears in the great film released in the 80's and possibly the director is a fan of that film. Another important aspect is the scenographies where the predominance of colors like black, dark blue, brown and gray; I think it was fair to show that in the place where the story takes place, there is no daylight and that makes everything cold, lonely, a perfect place for a ruthless hunt.
No puedo decir que las actuaciones son las mejores porque no lo son, tampoco diré que son malas y si pienso que es mejor definirlas cómo correctas; uno de los personajes principales, "John McBride", interpretado por Boyd Holbrook, es el típico personaje que está dispuesto a todo para acabar con lo que le causó un gran mal, pero este personaje dentro de su motivo existe una gran diferencia con otros personajes que aparecen en la mayoría de este tipo de films; lo interesante de "McBride" y lo que hace Holbrook en su actuación, es no estar cegado por la venganza, él está dispuesto a ayudar y posiblemente sea porque su personaje no es un cazador, sino un patólogo y se nota la compresión que tiene con las víctimas de la maldición y con las víctimas de la criatura y creo que eso lo entendió el actor que está siempre enfocado en poner fin a un peligro mortal, siempre de una manera inteligente y directa.
I can't say that the performances are the best because they are not, I won't say they are bad either and I think it is better to define them as correct; one of the main characters, "John McBride", played by Boyd Holbrook, is the typical character that is willing to do anything to end with what caused him a great evil, but this character within his motive there is a big difference with other characters that appear in most of this kind of films; The interesting thing about "McBride" and what Holbrook does in his performance, is not to be blinded by revenge, he is willing to help and possibly it is because his character is not a hunter, but a pathologist and you can see the understanding he has with the victims of the curse and with the victims of the creature and I think that this was understood by the actor who is always focused on putting an end to mortal danger, always in an intelligent and direct way.
Me gustó mucho The Cursed; es un film que cumple con todas las reglas impuestas para este tipo de películas. Es genial que pueda explorar un tipo de terror sobrenatural basado en maldiciones y que después cambie al verdadero tema que es el terror causado por un hombre lobo y es que si existe un tipo de historia que justamente esté muy relacionada con maldiciones, no hay duda que son estás donde veremos a inocentes portar con un peso de convertirse en una bestia que no reconoce nada de sus actos y con un apetito insaciable; en eso puedo decir que Sean Ellis hizo un gran trabajo porque fue sumamente fiel a lo que se ha hecho en anterioridad y la vez no se sintió que sea una fiel copia de otras producciones; posiblemente una crítica negativa pueda ser que debió tener escenas más violentas en los ataques, pero siendo sincero estoy convencido de que algunas veces mostrar menos puede ser lo mejor y más cuando es una producción pequeña; está historia no tenía necesidad de ser sumamente gore y estoy seguro de que se hubiera decidido a tomar ese camino, tal vez caería en algunas películas conocidas como "Clase B" y pienso de que esa no era la idea de su director. Me pareció genial ver un film de monstruos en todo lo que respecta a este género que en mi opinión origina todo lo referente a films u otras producciones de terror en el mundo del entretenimiento; es una historia que demuestra que el ser humano en sí puede ser igual de terrorífico que cualquier criatura monstruosa y que con poder, ambición y fuerza podemos ser tan viles cómo cualquier bestia; eso es lo que más me ha gustado de este film junto a que al hacer una breve investigación descubrí otros films basados en hombres lobo y que espero muy pronto ver. Recomiendo esta película por si les gusta este tipo de historias, ya que The Cursed es un buen, correcto y fiel film dentro de este género.
I really liked The Cursed; it's a film that fulfills all the rules imposed for this kind of movies. It's great that it can explore a type of supernatural horror based on curses and then change to the real theme which is the terror caused by a werewolf and if there is a type of story that is fairly closely related to curses, there is no doubt that these are the ones where we will see innocent people carrying a burden of becoming a beast that does not recognize anything of their actions and with an insatiable appetite; in that I can say that Sean Ellis did a great job because it was extremely faithful to what has been done before and at the same time it didn't feel like a faithful copy of other productions; possibly a negative criticism could be that it should have had more violent scenes in the attacks, but being honest I am convinced that sometimes showing less can be the best and more when it is a small production; this story had no need to be extremely gore and I am sure that if it had decided to go that way, maybe it would fall in some movies known as "B Class" and I think that was not the idea of its director. I thought it was great to see a monster film in everything related to this genre that in my opinion originates everything related to films or other horror productions in the world of entertainment; it is a story that shows that the human being itself can be just as terrifying as any monstrous creature and that with power, ambition and strength we can be as vile as any beast; that is what I liked most about this film along with the fact that when doing a brief research I discovered other films based on werewolves and I hope to see them very soon. I recommend this film if you like this kind of stories, since The Cursed is a good, correct and faithful film within this genre.
