I was skeptical about this film - the director has not done any good for many years, and Marvel's productions are often too safe and differ too little from each other. They were compounded by the fear that the next movie with one of the most interesting heroes (in terms of his power and possibilities - he is limited only by his imagination and, to a much lesser extent, the amount of mana), would not use his dormant potential. Fortunately, it turned out to be a good production for a relaxing blockbuster, which gave me quite a lot of fun, had a nice vibe of classic horror movies + used the PG-13 category to the very end (probably even more than the first Thanos movie). He has his problems (especially a lot of plot holes. that it's a Marvel movie (but I didn't mind it this time), but I can turn a blind eye to it for the most part. And they are all the less noticeable as it was obvious that Raimi himself had a lot of fun creating it. For example, after the previously mentioned scenes, which strongly refer to horror movies (as well as the script, or the facial expressions of the characters - at least in some moments), or the presentation of the power of new characters - he felt like a fish in the water. As if Raimi was still "in the game" as a director.
The main plot is saving American Chaves from the evil demon and Elisabeth Olsen, who has turned on the lonely woman mode after unsuccessful relationships with a dozen or so Chads - she wants blood and ordinary revenge will not satisfy her, especially when she is one of the most powerful creatures in the Marvel world. The new heroine is able to jump between universes and asks for help from Dr. Strange, or in fact two of them - the first betrayed her, and the second, ours, is trying to help her along with Wong. The heroes travel between universes to save American. The plot is trivial, some would say that it was too much (e.g. considering how fairy-tale and simplified the theme with books being the most important artifact in this production is), but it did not bother me. Yes, it made me laugh at a few moments, I was also disappointed with its simplicity, but during the screening this feeling disappeared. Why? Because the director made good use of the fact that this is a superhero movie - there is a lot of cool action, we got a lot of scenes in which Stephen showed his powers and there were some nice slogans that convinced me to think - e.g. Wong's speech at the very end of the film. I would like to know other versions of myself too, but I am grateful to be where I am, despite all the problems. As I said, there are no miracles and you can see that this is an MCU movie - it has some limitations, the script at times (although this time there is surprisingly few of them!) Is boring, it advertises more movies, but on the other hand, it's hard for me to remember if some other Marvel product contained so few! If we consider this movie as a mix of horror and popcorn action, which in my opinion is fully justified, because slashers and super-hero films, among other things, are exactly what, then such a simplified scenario is sufficient. Apart from 2 or 3 times when the characters talk too long and boringly, something is happening all the time.
If these are not action scenes, then interesting conversations between the characters we recognize, quite brutal murders (Blackbolt, Mr Fantastic, Captain Carter - top 3 most beautiful deaths in Marvel. I am shocked that Marvel showed Blackbolt's massacred brain, a few destroyed bodies or Cap Carter cut in half, like in "Mortal Kombat"). I was also very impressed by Elisabeth Olsen, who deserved more than one award for this role. At first I thought she would act as a chad-widow throughout the movie (only guilt and complaints about toxic masculinity were missing), but fortunately at one point the pissed-off crashed over the top and she began to mindlessly murder anyone who stood in her way - i.e. he did not obey her commands. Forgive me, but like Strange, I can't take her problem seriously when she's not physically there - I'm not making fun of people who have lost their children here. Either way, Olsen deserved an award for this role, Michael Myers in her interpretation was really scary. Admittedly, only in some moments, but there were enough of them (especially with other fragments where we felt terror) - if I watched this movie at night, not in the middle of the day, there would be a few jump-scares and other things characteristic of horror movies, could scare me a little. Olsen had wonderful facial expressions, she played with her whole face and body, I do not like her, but the way of expressing emotions made a really strong impression on me. As for the references to horror movies, forgive me - I don't know much about them. I saw a few important productions for this genre, but compared to some of my buddies (I greet you, Rafał and Mariusz), I am as thin as spider's urine. Nevertheless, even ignorant people like me found a lot of references to horror films here. You can see them at the beginning and they stay with us until the very end. There are scenes and flavors straight out of the slasher classics, subtle (and less subtle) references to cliches and patterns, easter eggs aimed at fans of "Evil Dead". If you like this genre or at least watched it en masse as a teenager, this movie will give you a lot of unlimited fun! And I did not write about some things, so as not to spoil your impressions. Let me put it this way, the finale of this movie was wonderful, just like the final match from the previous part.
As for the rest of the actors, Benedict played pretty well, but didn't impress me. A good actor plays a standard, ironic asshole like Tony Stark or Strange from the previous movie. America was ok, but convinced me even less. Illuminati except Cap Carter and Xavier did not impress me (as actors, because their show of power came out cool, although that term fits them poorly, when you remember that Scarlet Witch made shit out of them). Patrick Stewart has never let me down. Even though I prefer his more brutal version from the Logan movie, his lovable incarnation (yes, I know it's just a mask he hides behind, and is actually a terrible slap) is very pleasing to the eye. Carter didn't have much to play, but I like these versions of strong women, especially when played by a solid actress rather than a girl with a petite body. At least she didn't piss me off unlike the clown Baron was. He may be a good actor, but I didn't see it in the role, I was too irritated. And not that I end this paragraph pessimistically - Wong is gaining more and more in my eyes. Although this one could only prove itself in the first half of the film, it was very nice. It is not a great role, but his honest character and devotion to his work is enough for me.
As for the special effects, they looked good (some say worse and well, I can agree - they were enjoyable for me), but in a few years they probably won't be impressive anymore. I omit here the spells of Strange and Wong, which I always associate with "League of Legends" or DotA2. Fights with monsters, duels for energy, action scenes in general and creative use of wizard's powers came out very cool! I was surprised that Sam Raimi had shot so many good fight scenes after so many years of hiatus. Aside from the Russo brothers' movies, I don't think I have seen any MCU movie that impresses me like this. And I must say that this is another proof that you can transfer DBZ well to the big screen. It takes a lot of bad will to say otherwise.
All in all, it's a very nice action movie. I doubt I would remember him very warmly in a few years, but today he gave him a lot of fun and provided a nice rest at the weekend. It doesn't stand out in a decisive way, but I wouldn't be able to say it's a bad movie for popcorn or relaxing. For me, this is one of the better Marvel movies. I rate it on +7/10.
Byłem sceptyczny wobec tego filmu - reżyser nie wydał przez wiele lat nic dobrego, a produkcje Marvela są często zbyt bezpieczne i w zbyt małym stopniu różnią się od siebie. Były one potęgowane obawą, że kolejny film z jednym z najciekawszych bohaterów (pod względem jego mocy i możliwości - ogranicza go jedynie wyobraźnia i w dużo mniejszym stopniu ilość many), nie wykorzysta drzemiącego w nim potencjału. Na szczęście okazało się, że to dobra produkcja, jak na relaksujący blockbuster, która zapewniła mi dość dużo frajdy, miała fajny vibe klasycznych horrorów + wykorzystała kategorię PG-13 do samego końca (chyba jeszcze bardziej niż pierwszy film z Thanosem). Ma swoje problemy (przede wszystkim wyjątkowo dużo dziur fabularnych. Część zwalam na to, że miał to być obraz w klimacie starych slasherów, jednak kilka zbyt dużych uproszczeń + kilku bzdur, jak np. obrona twierdzy magów, IMO obronić się nie da), widać że to film Marvela (ale tym razem mi to nie przeszkadzało), ale w większości mogę przymknąć na nie oko. A są tym mniej odczuwalne, że widać było, iż Sam Raimi bawił się bardzo dobrze przy jego tworzeniu. Np. po wcześniej wspomnianych scenach, które bardzo mocno nawiązują do filmów grozy (jak również po scenariuszu, czy mimice bohaterów - przynajmniej w niektórych momentach), czy przedstawieniu mocy nowych bohaterów - czuł się w tym jak ryba w wodzie. Tak jakby Raimi nadal był "w grze" jako reżyser.
Główny wątek fabularny, to uratowanie American Chaves przed złym demonem oraz Elisabeth Olsen, której włączył się tryb samotnej kobiety po nieudanych związkach z kilkunastoma Chadami - pragnie krwi i zwykła zemsta jej nie zaspokoi, zwłaszcza gdy jest jedną z najpotężniejszych istot w świecie Marvela. Nowa bohaterka potrafi przeskakiwać pomiędzy wszechświatami i zwraca się o pomoc o Dr Strange'a, czy w zasadzie dwóch z nich - pierwszy ją zdradził, a drugi, czyli ten nasz, próbuje jej pomóc wraz z Wongiem. Bohaterowie podróżują między wszechświatami, aby uratować American. Fabuła jest banalna, niektórzy by powiedzieli że za bardzo (np. biorąc pod uwagę, jak bardzo baśniowy i uproszczony jest motyw z książkami będącymi najważniejszym artefaktem w tej produkcji), mi to jednak nie przeszkadzało. Owszem, śmieszyło mnie w paru momentach, byłem też rozczarowany jego prostotą, ale w trakcie seansu to uczucie zniknęło. Czemu? Bo reżyser dobrze wykorzystał fakt, że to film o superbohaterach - jest dużo fajnej akcji, dostaliśmy dużo scen, w których Stephen pokazał swoje moce oraz było kilka fajnych haseł, które przekonały mnie do przemyśleń - np. mowa Wonga na sam koniec filmu. Też bym chciał poznać inne wersje samego siebie, ale jestem wdzięczny, że jestem tu gdzie jestem, mimo wszystkich problemów. Jak już mówiłem, cudów nie ma i widać, że to film MCU - ma pewne ograniczenia, scenariusz momentami (choć tym razem jest ich zaskakująco niewiele!) jest nudny, reklamuje kolejne filmy, ale z drugiej strony, trudno jest mi sobie przypomnieć, czy jakiś inny produkt Marvela zawierał ich tak mało! Jeżeli rozpatrywać ten film jako mix horroru i popcornowego akcyjniaka, co moim zdaniem jest w pełni uzasadnione, bo slashery i filmy super-hero między innymi tym właśnie są, to taki uproszczony scenariusz jest wystarczający. Pomijając 2, może 3 momenty, gdy postacie zbyt długo i nudno gadają, to cały czas coś się dzieje.
Jeśli nie są to sceny akcji, to ciekawe rozmowy między rozpoznawalnymi przez nas bohaterami, dość brutalne morderstwa (Blackbolt, Mr Fantastic, Captain Carter - top 3 najpiękniejszych śmierci w Marvelu. Jestem w szoku, że Marvel pokazał zmasakrowany mózg Blackbolta, kilka rozwalonych ciał albo Cap Carter przeciętą na pół, jak w "Mortal Kombat"). Duże wrażenie zrobiła na mnie również Elisabeth Olsen, która zasłużyła na niejedną nagrodę za tę rolę. Początkowo myślałem, że będzie się zachowywać jako chad-widow przez cały film (zabrakło tylko wina i narzekania na toksyczną męskość), ale na szczęście w pewnym momencie wkurwienie wywaliło ponad wszelką skalę i zaczęła bezmyślnie mordować każdego, kto stanął na jej drodze - tzn. nie słuchał jej poleceń. Wybaczcie, ale podobnie jak Strange nie mogę na poważnie traktować jej problemu, gdy go fizycznie nie ma - nie naśmiewam się tutaj z osób, które straciły dzieci. Tak czy inaczej, Olsen zasłużyła na nagrodę za tę rolę, Michael Myers w jej interpretacji, był naprawdę straszny. Co prawda tylko w niektórych momentach, ale było ich wystarczająco dużo (zwłaszcza z innymi fragmentami, w których czuliśmy grozę) - gdybym oglądał ten film w nocy, a nie środku dnia, to kilka jump-scare'ów i innych rzeczy charakterystycznych dla horrorów, mogłoby mnie lekko przestraszyć. Olsen miała cudowną mimikę, grała całą twarzą i ciałem, nie przepadam za nią, ale sposób ekspresji emocji zrobił na mnie naprawdę mocne wrażenie. Jeśli chodzi o nawiązania do horrorów, to musicie mi wybaczyć - nie znam się na nich zbyt dobrze. Widziałem kilka ważnych dla tego gatunku produkcji, ale w porównaniu do niektórych moich kumpli (pozdrawiam Cię Rafał i Mariusz), to jestem cienki jak mocz pająka. Niemniej, nawet takie ignorant jak ja, znalazł tu bardzo dużo nawiązań do horrorów. Widać je już na początku i trwają z nami aż do samego końca. Są tu sceny i smaczki wprost wyrwane z klasyków slasherów, subtelne (i mniej subtelne) nawiązania do klisz i schematów, easter eggi skierowane do fanów "Evil Dead". Jeżeli lubicie ten gatunek lub przynajmniej oglądaliście go masowo będąc nastolatkiem, to ten film zapewni Wam mnóstwo nieskrępowanej radochy! A o niektórych rzeczach nie napisałem, by nie popsuć Wam wrażeń. Powiem tak, finał tego filmu był cudowny, podobnie jak finałowy pojedynek z poprzedniej części.
Co do reszty aktorów, to Benedict zagrał całkiem nieźle, ale nie zrobił na mnie wrażenia. Ot dobry aktor gra standardowego, ironicznego dupka jak Tony Stark, czy Strange z poprzedniego filmu. America była ok, ale przekonała mnie do siebie jeszcze słabiej. Illuminati poza Cap Carter i Xavierem nie zrobili na mnie wrażenia (jako aktorzy, bo ich pokaz mocy wypadł spoko, choć to określenie słabo do nich pasuje, jak człowiek sobie przypomni że Scarlet Witch zrobiła z nich gówno). Patrick Stewart chyba nigdy mnie nie zawiódł. Mimo że wolę jego brutalniejszą wersję z filmu o Loganie, to jego sympatyczna inkarnacja (tak, wiem że to tylko maska, za którą się chowa, a tak naprawdę jest strasznym bucem), jest bardzo miła dla oka. Carter nie miała zbyt dużo do grania, ale lubię takie wersje silnych kobiet, zwłaszcza gdy wciela się w nie solidna aktorka, a nie dziewczyna o filigranowej budowie ciała. Przynajmniej mnie nie wkurzyła w przeciwieństwie do clowna, jakim był Baron. Być może to dobry aktor, ale nie dostrzegłem tego w tej roli, byłem zbyt mocno zirytowany. A żeby nie było, że kończę pesymistycznie ten akapit - Wong zyskuje w moich oczach coraz bardziej. Ten co prawda mógł się wykazać tylko w 1 połowie filmu, ale wypadł bardzo sympatycznie. Nie jest to wielka rola, ale jego poczciwy charakter i oddanie swojej pracy mi w zupełności wystarcza.
Jeśli chodzi o efekty specjalne, to wyglądały nieźle (niektórzy mówią, że gorzej i cóż, mogę się z tym zgodzić - dla mnie były enjoyable), ale za parę lat raczej nie będą już robić wrażenia. Pomijam tutaj czary Strange'a i Wonga, które niezmiennie kojarzą mi się z "League of Legends" lub DotA2. Walki z potworami, pojedynki na energię, generalnie sceny akcji i kreatywne wykorzystanie mocy czarodziejów wyszły bardzo fajnie! Byłem zaskoczony, że Sam Raimi po tylu latach przerwy, nakręcił tyle dobrych scen walki. Pomijając filmy braci Russo, to chyba nie widziałem żadnego filmu z MCU, który by zrobił na mnie takie wrażenie. No i obligatoryjnie muszę powiedzieć, że to kolejny dowód na to, że można dobrze przenieść DBZ na duży ekran. Trzeba naprawdę dużo złej woli, by mówić inaczej.
Reasumując, to bardzo przyjemny film akcji. Wątpię bym go bardzo ciepło wspominał za parę lat, ale na dzień dzisiejszy dał mu dużo frajdy i zapewnił miły odpoczynek w weekend. Nie wyróżnia się niczym w zdecydowany sposób, ale nie byłbym w stanie powiedzieć, że to złe kino do popcornu, czy relaksu. Jak dla mnie, jest to jeden z lepszych filmów Marvela. Oceniam na +7/10.
