Hello, dear series and movie lovers. Today I am back again with a review for you. This time I will talk about a Colombian series produced by Caracol Television and co-starring singer Greeicy, is available on the Netflix platform.
SINOPSIS
RITMO SALVAJE= ESTEREOTIPOS | WILD RHYTHM= STEREOTYPES
NI MALOS NI BUENOS:
Karina y Antonia FUENTE DE IMAGEN| Karina and Antonia IMAGE SOURCE
Once I finished it - and I finished it only with the intention of reviewing it because by the 4th chapter I didn't want to watch it anymore - the first thought that came to my mind was the problem with the script, as if they didn't know how to work with nuances. It seems that they wanted to achieve a neutrality between the characters. It is common to see antagonists and protagonists, but the presentation of our protagonists was terrible and their development got worse, sometimes the protagonists crossed the line and got lost in the antagonism, and so on until it was a bold and illogical mix.
I speak of several protagonists, because although the main ones are Karina and Antonia, the members of Pura Kaye, Karina's friends, are recurring characters and a solid part of the plot, being important secondary characters. We will talk more about them later.
EL DRAMA
Karina y Antonia FUENTE DE IMAGEN | Karina and Antonia IMAGE SOURCE
I did not see drama, I saw a succession of unconnected events to which they wanted to give relevance. For example, Antonia's motivations for wanting to improve in dance, if the previous thesis had been fulfilled I think I would give her credit. But not at all, I only saw a capricious girl who wanted to be the protagonist of the Royal (academy presented by Juliet and Romeo). I don't even know how to explain what happened to her, she ends up with her obsessive ex and starts a "romance" with a criminal capable of being a part of a hitman, who also cheats on her in the final chapters. And she is the rich girl whose mother does not want to give her money to continue dancing.
The most solid role of the whole series was that of Karina played by Greeicy Rondón, a successful Colombian singer and dancer. I saw her as a woman who is forward thinking, who doesn't get involved in so many things, focused on dancing. She does make mistakes in the series like everyone else, but the development of her character maintains a line. Antonia is jumping from one side to another, sometimes she is not even understood. In addition, we see Karina much more focused on the dance than Antonia herself, the desperation to get a scholarship makes her lose her objective.
There is a fine line between achieving social criticism through the media and applauding it. What happened for example with Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal, which is also from Caracol TV, who want to put -most of the time- the criminal theme but end up in a certain way "glorifying it" this was one of my main conflicts with the series of course this goes hand in hand with the stereotype theme.
Antonia (the rich girl) "falls in love" with Checho (played by David Palacio) brother of "Bombita" Pura Kaye's dancer. And Checho sells stupendous drugs, steals, and in the final chapters participates in sicariato. He also cheats on Antonia with Ximena, PK's dancer. And although this type of productions should not be examined under real life moral standards, it is super difficult not to do so since there are too many sensitive points represented weakly and without order.
This is how we see that what the production wanted to talk about: drugs, alcohol, money, poverty, ambition, and other topics that would serve as "social criticism" become only referential topics, they were not adequately raised to be critical.
I'm not going to say that all the music was bad, maybe it's not my style so much dembow, but I admit that some songs did give that air of urbanity. Besides, I liked the main theme of the series, so the soundtrack was enough to make the series coherent.
IMAGEN Y ESTÉTICA

I personally don't like the image editing where you see the sweaty Latinos, as if they were just a reggaeton video, which is what they wanted to do in the series. It follows a little bit the style of Honey with Jessica Alba, the color is super important because it makes the brown colors much more noticeable, plus it's very urban. But I don't like it.
Now, it is inevitable to talk about the aesthetics to which they put a lot of effort, especially with the character of Ximena, one of Pura Kaye's dancers. I think her role was well represented, she is the bad friend of the good ones, but cornered by life and rancor, she always releases venom.
The neon colors, the outlines, the costumes, the wigs are part of the aesthetics. But I didn't like it, it's not something I'm going to admire like Euphoria because the level of image quality doesn't compare and because in the latter series it is a narrative resource. While in Ritmo Salvaje I think they have used it to attract the attention of young audiences, I don't know if it is a trend to use these styles.

After the chaos, betrayals and other events that I won't mention, we have the ending: A dance with Guaynaa where Antonia gets hurt and there are two possible suspects: the ex and Ximena. An open ending that hints at a new season to come and I pray for it to be cancelled.
The whole development of the series was bad, from beginning to end, and I say this beyond criticism. It is not a series that I would recommend, I was looking for opinions to understand a little more, but I did not see reviews only say that it was a "success". And I honestly don't see it that way. They wanted to talk or make reference to too many topics, the dance is only as an ornament, the flaws in the characters and the script, the sequence of events. The intentions and / or motivations are brief. I don't know, for me it's all wrong.
Puntuación: 2/10 | Score: 2/10
