Guanahacabibes is a National Park and Biosphere Reserve located in the Province of Pinar del Río in the westernmost part of the #Island of #Cuba. In this reserve, there are numerous endemic and protected species of the country, such as sea turtles 🐢, butterflies 🦋, among other species of animals and plants.
Guanahacabibes es un Parque Nacional y Reserva de la Biosfera ubicada en la Provincia de Pinar del Río en el extremo occidental de la Isla de #Cuba. En esta reserva se encuentran un sin numero de especies endémicas y protegidas del país como las tortugas marinas 🐢, mariposas 🦋, entre otras especies de animales y plantas
I heard about this place through the internet and upon seeing the work they were doing, I didn’t hesitate to travel 🚌 there to see it for myself and also to help with the task. Without a doubt, a unique opportunity in an incredible place, the adventure was calling me 🛤️.
Escuché de este lugar a través de internet y al ver la labor que desempeñaban no dudé en viajar 🚌 hasta el lugar para conocerlo y de paso colaborar con la tarea. Sin duda una oportunidad única en un lugar increíble, la aventura me llamaba 🛤️.
The park directors were very attentive, and in an information room, they explained in great detail the environmental protection tasks 📑 carried out there and the work we would be doing over the next ten days at a beach called El Holandés 🏖️ .
Los directores del parque fueron muy atentos y en un salón de información nos explicaron con lujos de detalles la tarea 📑 de protección del medio ambiente que allí se lleva a cabo y que íbamos a desempeñar nosotros durante los próximos diez días en una playa llamada El Holandes 🏖️.
Within the Biosphere Reserve 💠 Dentro de la Reserva
After taking our information, we began to enter the reserve 🚌, and within the first 10 kilometers, the wonderful views started. The first was a lookout at the edge of a cliff that showed how the sea furiously crashed against the cliff walls. A magnificent storm could be seen in the distance, and the sea 🌊 expressed its full fury 🔥.
Después de tomarnos los datos comenzamos a adentrarnos en la reserva 🚌 y en los primeros 10 kilómetros empezaron las maravillosas vistas, lo primero fue un mirador al borde de un acantilado que dejaba ver como el mar golpeaba con furia las paredes del acantilado. Una maravillosa tormenta se apreciaba a lo lejos y el mar 🌊 lo expresaba en todo su furor 🔥.
The camp 🏕️ El campamento
Once inside the Reserve, until the group that relieves us at the end of 10 days arrives, we cannot leave🚫. There is no way out because the exit is about 60 kilometers away, and since it is a protected area, there are no human settlements 🙅♂️ or vehicle traffic 🚳. We are completely alone. It is a complete survival task where you have to manage your resources to stay hydrated and fed every day🗓️.
Una vez dentro de la Reserva hasta que el grupo que nos releva al final de 10 días, no podemos salir🚫, no hay manera debido a que la salida se encuentra a unos 60 kilómetros y debido a que es un lugar protegido no hay asentamientos humanos🙅♂️, ni trafico de vehículos 🚳, estamos completamente solos. Es una tarea de completa supervivencia donde tienes que administrar tus recursos para mantenerte hidratado y alimentado todos los días 🗓️.
Call of duty 💂 Llamado del deber
During the following days, I spent my time exploring the reserve. Among the species that caught my attention were the butterflies🦋, as July is their mating season, the deer🦌, the red crabs 🦀, the iguanas 🐊, and the crocodiles 🐊.
Durante los siguientes días me dediqué durante el día a explorar la reserva. Dentro de especies que llamaron mi atención estaban las mariposas 🦋 dado que julio es su etapa de apareamiento, los venados 🦌, los cangrejos rojos 🦀, las iguanas 🦎 y los cocodrilos 🐊.
I was able to photograph this female red crab 🦀, also known as #Gecarcinus-ruricola or zombie 🧟 crab, carrying a sack of eggs to the seashore during a storm to release them and allow the next generation to be born.
Pude fotografiar a este cangrejo rojo🦀 hembra también conocido como #Gecarcinus-ruricola o can grejo zombie 🧟cargando un saco de huevos que lleva a la orilla del mar durante una tormenta para desprenderse de el y nazca la siguiente generación.
The storm also prevented the dragonflies from flying, so this little friend took a rest on a coral 🐚 in the sand until it passed.
También la tormenta impedía a las libélulas volar así que esta pequeña amiga tomó un descanso sobre un coral 🐚 en la arena hasta que pasara la misma.
The nighttime periods are used for the protection of the sea turtle, a species that is on the brink of extinction. Here is an article I published if you want to know more about this work 🐢.

Wilde Biosphere 🐺 Biosfera salvaje
After walking about 20 kilometers westward deeper into the reserve, I arrived at the #crocodile-observatory 👀, an impressive lake filled with species of fish 🐟 and crabs 🦀. But without a doubt, the main spectacle was the crocodiles, which camouflaged themselves as rotten logs floating among the #mangroves🌲.
Después de caminar al rededor de 20 kilómetros en dirección oeste más al fondo de la reserva llegué a al #observatorio 👀 de cocodrilos, un lago impresionante repletas de especies de peces 🐟 y cangrejos 🦀 pero sin duda el espectáculo principal eran los cocodrilos que se camuflan como troncos podridos flotando junto a los mangles 🌲.
A place protected 🛡️ by wooden railings keeps observers from falling into the murky waters adorned with algae and infested with #crocodiles 🐊 that await any lapse from fish or animals to #attack .
Un lugar protegido por barandas de madera protege a los observadores de caer a las turbias aguas adornadas de algas e infestadas de #cocodrilos 🐊 que aguardan cualquier descuido de peces o animales para atacar.
On the tail of the caiman 🐊 En la cola del caiman
The Island of Cuba, due to its strange shape, is compared to a sleeping caiman 🐊 lying on the surface, with the western end being the tail and the eastern end the head. This time, I believe I have taken the caiman by the tail. It is difficult to access, and not many people can reach the Roncali lighthouse, the westernmost point of the island of Cuba. And here I am, proud to have achieved it and to have had such a rewarding experience 😄🏅.
La Isla de Cuba debido a su forma extraña es comparada con un caimán 🐊 que duerme sobre la superficie donde el extremo oeste es la cola y el extremo este es la cabeza, esta vez creo que he tomado al caimán por la cola. De difícil acceso no muchas personas pueden llegar al faro Roncali lugar más al extremo oeste de la isla de Cuba, y pues aquí estoy, orgulloso de haberlo podido lograr y de haber podido tener una experiencia tan gratificante 😄🏅.
