My RE&E Journey in Auz & Te Waipounamu: Day 17, Dunedin Albatross and Botanical Garden

Dunedin is a UNESCO Literary City, and the home to Otago University. Every bit of it feels like a university town, which is exactly the type of place I hope to retire to.
For now, though, it's just a visit, starting with the Royal Albatross Centre. It's a great setup and museum, and also a great spot for watching blue penguins return to their nests once the sun goes down. We saw ~50 come out of the ocean in groups. They tumble in the waves and get cleaned up. Then, if paried, it's off to their nest on the hillside to regurgitate food into their youngster's bellies. Reminds me of my mom's cooking.

Prior to that, I spent a few hours hiking around the Botanical Garden adjacent to my motel. It's a beautiful layout, a small version of Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC. Plants from around the world, some over 100 years old, thrive in this well-manicured environment.

As I looked for a spot for tea. This college town offers a broad selection of places for takeaway. I savored some gluten free fish and chips from Best Cafe, made with the tenderest blue cod ever! In looking for a spot to munch, I came across Peter. This pan statue is unlike the one I've often visited in London, but beautifully crafted and a joy to observe whilst soaking up the surrounding beauty.
