Reding Walk 📷 Malaga - Spain

Reding Walk is one of the most important and emblematic streets in the city of Malaga.

20230710_172005.jpg

It has an extension of 450 metres and starts in the city centre district heading east, a two-way avenue that communicates very well the area of the historic centre of the city with the eastern part of the city. Specifically, it starts on the hillside where the Gibralfaro Castle is located, where there are numerous traffic lanes and a large roundabout.

What characterises the Paseo de Reding are its 19th century bourgeois-style buildings and houses designed by great architects of the time.

It is named after the Swiss military man Theodore Reding, who won the Battle of Bailén during the War of Independence and was also governor of Malaga.

As it is such an emblematic street, there are many buildings of architectural relevance along its route.

This can be done under a natural pergola made with very leafy trees, which provide abundant freshness, especially in summer. Under this pergola and all along the route, there are numerous benches for resting and shops, such as kiosks, cafeterias, food shops, hairdressers, among others.

Among the buildings of maximum importance, very touristic and of great relevance, as I said before, are: The Bullring, the Noble Hospital, the Edificio desfile del Amor, the palace of La Tinta and the 5 star hotel Palacio Miramar.

On the other side of the road we find the Municipal Heritage Museum, the Félix Sánchez Houses and a number of buildings created during the bourgeoisie period.

The latter have a very particular 19th century style, with their characteristic grilles, large windows, doors and ceramic roofs. All in an excellent state of preservation, it is an attraction for many tourists, especially because this promenade is very popular with them on their way to the Malagueta beach, due to its freshness and good historical views.

As I mentioned before, one of the most important monuments is the Bullring of Malaga, neo-Mudejar style from the end of the 19th century, which has been declared a site of cultural, historical and artistic interest. Bullfights are held there on special dates.

At the beginning of the promenade is the Hospital Noble, an old neo-Gothic hospital built in honour of an English doctor.

Just above the Cafeteria Flor we find the so-called Edificio Desfile del Amor, built for housing in a modern style and has also been declared of cultural interest.

Continuing along the route we see the French-style Ink Palace. It has this name because it was originally the headquarters of the Andalusian Railway Company where large quantities of ink were transported to print banknotes.

The Museo del Patrimonio Municipal is a museum where different architectural and archaeological pieces of historical and cultural interest of the city are displayed. It is free of charge, but photography is not allowed.

Casas de Félix Sáenz are one of the most beautiful and outstanding constructions of the whole tour. They are built in a regionalist style mixed with neo-Renaissance among others, with beautiful towers in the attics. The merchant Félix Sáenz had them built to rent them out and they are still used for that purpose today.

Finally, we find the luxurious 5-star Hotel Palacio or Gran Hotel Miramar, inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1926. It was first called Príncipe de Asturias, where the kings spent several summers enjoying the luxury and the great view of the Mediterranean Sea.

During the civil war, it became a blood hotel, but when the war ended it returned to its original condition.

The hotel has been used for several films, including Fire of Africa.

The hotel has been renovated to be what it is today, one of the most prestigious and luxurious hotels in the city.

The breaks under the shade of the pergola of trees are relaxing, and there are incredible views of the residential buildings as well as the historical and cultural buildings of the city.
