Out of Control - 5 Minute Freewrite

Hello Hivers, readers and writers, how are you all doing today?

I never know where these challenges @mariannewest sets for us, will take me. Sometimes I write a fictional story with completely made up characters and sometimes inspiration takes me on a quest of introspection. If you follow me for a while, you know that I am no stranger to philosophical posts, but fiction always finds it's way back to me.

Let's go and see where this path takes us!

Elly sat in her black SUV with a slight disappointment on her face. You couldn't really notice it, it would flash like a lightning bolt in her eyes for a second and gone in the other. It was not like her to give out any emotions, she felt it made her look weak. This time a speck of dust was all it took for her to briefly loose her calm:

"Black car was a bad idea!"

She didn't have too much time to think about it, the next meeting is about to start and she had to be there in time. Being late is one of those luxury things she couldn't allow herself, so she rushed through the traffic trying not to think about that dust on the perfectly polished board.

Those brief few minutes of fast driving was all she had during a busy day like this one. Going from one meeting to another, checking e-mails, making phone calls. Looking in the mirror to see if some strand of hair lost it's way or is her make-up still looking fresh, even after many hours. But, often just a blank stare would bounce of the little car mirror, looking back at her. No emotions, not even feeling of emptiness, nothing.

Business made her loose all signs that an emotional woman is behind that perfect mask and suit. She had to keep it under control to be successful and taken seriously, but sometimes that mischievous little girl found her way out of the shell.

It was in that car and road she felt like belonging, even for a few minutes. Music was loud, she controlled the speed and she would just let go. Still, you couldn't see it in her face, but her heart was pumping, her hands were getting warmer and tingly, as the idea of a freedom overwhelmed her mind.

"But, I couldn't just go away"

She thought as the meeting place was getting closer and closer. People counted on her, she was the responsible one. Red traffic light gave her the chance to compose and calm herself down, to take a deep breath and move on with her life. But as the seconds on the light ticked down, she wasn't calmer, on contrary.

The reflection in the little car mirror had fear in it's eyes, she was terrified of the choice and the existence of one. Is she afraid to go or to keep driving? Adrenaline kept going up and she started breathing faster, as if she was being chased.

Elly turned off the phone and as the light turned green, she kept driving. The little girl won and the reflection sparked with joy looked back at her after a long time.

With love,
Tamara
