My Front Door - 5 Minute Freewrite

Hey you passionate writers and dedicated readers, how are you on this gloomy, perfect for writing day?

Some days are made for writing and some are made for reading. Like today, the mist is covering the wet pavement, it's rainy and cold, a call for some warm coffee and a book, or in my case a call to check the new 5 Minute Freewrite Challenge from @mariannewest. I know she would inspire me to write something good and different, so let's take this show on the road, but before we go, let's see what my front door is all about.

A thought of my door step awoken some nostalgia.

I couldn't really put my finger on the reason behind it until I stood up and walked to my front door to see. I'm not a particularly emotional person and for sure I rarely get nostalgic, but there was something about this theme that made me think of a few front doors in my life.

Some of them will forever remain familiar, I wonder if that word has anything to do with family. Because, in the essence of it, I can see a bit of family in every front door. We have a tradition of taking our shoes off before going in, and I can already see a bit of nostalgia there. Strange, but customs and traditions, no matter how small or silly they look, always have a special place in my heart.

I remember how my nanny used to arrange our shoes on her warn-out door step, ready to be put on, whenever we were up for adventure as kids. Front doors are portals that take you away and in to unknown, but also a welcoming door with a familiar and warm world of your own behind it.

As I approached my front door, I realized where all the emotions are coming from. I see it every day, yet I never saw the depth behind those scattered shoes all over. I usually just get frustrated at the sight of a messy hallway, missing the point of blessing and joy. Sometimes, the smallest things awake the biggest feelings. This time it was some little boots and shoes, my son ruffled this morning while choosing which one to put on.

He had a choice, the ability to make a pick and feel proud about it. My front door was never messier but at the same time never filled with more happiness and courage. Ready to go on an adventure, his little shoes make a bold statement on the passing of the time and little things we take for granted.

Being a portal to the beauty of the outside world or safe haven for some rough days, front doors are magical little borders that shield us and send us off. Always there, waiting patiently.

With love,
Tamara
