A Road Trip to Rekindle the Flame

The whistling sound of the Teapot filled the room with its steam glutting the kitchen wall.

“Donald, could you turn the gas off, please?”

“I’m taking a dump!” Donald yelled back.

“Oh, come on. You took a dump a few seconds ago!” Barbara retorted.

“Well, I’m taking another now,”

“Asshole. How I hate this man!” Barbara said angrily as she hurried to the kitchen.

“I heard that,” Donald shouted back.

“You heard nothing,”

As Barbara got to the kitchen, she turned the gas off and quickly made tea for both of them.

They were going on a road trip and this road trip was more important to Barbara than anything else at the moment. It was a bonding process between her and Donald and wouldn’t want anything sabotaging that.

They had triumphed from the stage where they were slowly drifting apart from their love lives; where they could no longer feel their hearts beat for each other and were gradually falling out of love to fighting their way through it. Now, going on a road trip was going to give them that solitude they seek, that peace they desire, and that love they deserve.

“Hey, baby,” Donald said, kissing the side of her neck gently with his arms wrapped around her waist.

Barbara dropped the teapot on the kitchen counter and turned around with two tea cups in her hands.

“You reek of poop!” she said and Donald chuckled before taking the teacup from her. “Do you have all the things arranged in the car?”

“Everything except you,”

“I’d just finish with the tea and we’d get going.”

Barbara took a sip of her tea while Donald stared at her.

“What?” she asked.

Donald dropped his cup and took the cup from her as well, placing it on the counter as well. He then pulled her by her waist so that she was now closer to his chest.

Barbara looked a little confused as she stared up at his eyes and he took her gaze in his. He had a look of empathy and behind those eyes lies love; lots of love that his heart could no longer contain.

He stroked her hair, swept a strand of stray hair behind her ears, and rubbed his thumb on her eyebrows. She blinked frequently and within those seconds of her blinking, he placed a soft kiss on her lips.

“Don,” Barbara called with a broad smile on her face. His eyes were doing more talking than his eyes were.

“I love you, Barb. I love you so much that I had no idea how I was able to live in those moments when we were drifting apart. I can’t even breathe rightly without your love for me. I don't mean to idolize you or anything but my heart is about to explode from so much love that I feel for you. I love you so much, baby. So damn much beyond words!”

“Donald,” she called him with so much love in her heart and eyes as well.

They loved each other so much beyond what they could think of. They love each other more than they even know.

“You don’t have to say anything, baby. I just wanted to share what I have been feeling for the past few days and I’m grateful to you for giving me, for giving us a second chance at love. For giving us a chance to fight, for not giving up on me, on us. I hope this road trip strengthens us even more.”

His words struck her sharp like lightning. His words were so deep and she felt them deeply from the depth of her heart which transformed into tears rolling down her cheeks.

“I love you so much, Don. I love you more than life itself.”

They stood in each other’s arms for a long while before finally hitting the road.

With hands firmly on the steering wheel and eyes focused on the road, speeding at 100m/hr. They had broad smiles on their faces and from time to time, Barbara would massage the back of his head.

“What was the most memorable moment with me, Barb?” Donald asked out of nowhere after they had been on the road for 3 hours.

“The time you came running under the rain with tampons and pain relief after I told you about my period.”

“That was a big deal? I mean, you were alone that night, I couldn't have left you alone on your own.”

“You remembered you also stayed the night, making hot water for me and rubbing my belly?”

“That was just a normal thing to do. I would like to hear the out-of-ordinary thing I did,” Donald said and Barbara turned to her side to face him with a mild smile on her face.

“That was beyond ordinary to me. I had no one but you were that someone to me!”

Donald turned his head to her and then back on the road.

“You mean so much to me!”
