In September 1959, the visit of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to the United States began. The event is unique in the history of relations between the two countries.
For the first time, the head of the Soviet state went overseas, and even for 13 days. It was a wise move to prevent confrontation between the nuclear Powers and to ease international tensions.
Khrushchev held talks with President Dwight Eisenhower, visited many cities, met with industrialists and congressmen, journalists, workers and farmers.
American society and the technological progress of the USA made a great impression on him.
The Americans were delighted with the newest aircraft on which the Soviet leader made a transatlantic flight – it was the Tu-114, at that time the largest, fastest and only turboprop passenger aircraft with a swept wing in the world.
