According to northern mythology, most of the Valkyries are daughters of the god Odin, some are daughters of the god Thor. The very word "valkyrie" is literally translated as "picking up the fallen". That is, despite all the modern romanticization of the image, in their essence, Valkyries are goddesses of death who carry the souls of fallen soldiers to Valhalla.
Also, in ancient poems we find references to another function of valkyries, actually younger goddesses of war who help soldiers in battle. For example, there is a mention of how Odin instructs the valkyrie Sigrdriva to support the army of King Hjalm-Gunnar in battle, and to hinder the army of his opponent, King Agnar.
Obviously, the archetype of a warrior woman found a deep response among the peoples of the north. The fact that Viking women often fought side by side with men is questionable - it is possible that this is just a modern myth from the movies. But the ancient Greek historian Herodotus testifies to the fact that among the ancestors of the Ukrainians, the Scythians, women really took part in battles on an equal footing with men.
Genes are a powerful thing, and according to the latest statistics, in 2023 there will be more than 63,000 women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 43,000 of them military personnel. They resist the Russian occupiers side by side with men.
The archetype of the female warrior found its bright and historical reflection in the mythology of some peoples, mainly Northern Europeans, obviously from a very difficult life. Just as it is not easy now for the Ukrainian nation to fight for its freedom and survival, we find strong parallels with the archetypes of the ancient Scythians and Scandinavians.
