(ESP-ENG) Shadow Skill - Movie Review! [OVA]

When I did the review of Akira I kept in mind to continue watching gems from past decades and this time we embark on Shadow Skill, an anime which is very difficult to get but looking for it you can find something. This dates back to the years 95-96 and is a story that has about 26 chapters and 3 OVAs. Today I'm going to talk about one of them which serves perfectly to understand the plot and decide that we want to see these jewels of the past in its anime version. Shadow Skill is a shonen that brings us action, martial arts and the eternal struggle between good and evil.

Cuando hice la reseña de Akira me quedó en la mente seguir viendo joyas de décadas pasadas y en esta oportunidad nos embarcamos en Shadow Skill, una anime el cual es muy complicado de conseguir pero que buscando se puede encontrar algo. Esto data de los años 95-96 y es una historia cuto anime tiene unos 26 capítulos y 3 OVAs. Hoy les voy a hablar de uno de ellos el cual sirve perfectamente para entender la trama y decidir que queremos ver estas joyas del pasado en su versión anime. Shadow Skill es un shonen que nos trae acción, artes marciales y la lucha eterna entre el bien y el mal.

We are in a kingdom called Karuda, the home of hundreds of warriors who aspire to possess the skills called “Shadow Skill” which are nothing more than perfection at the highest level of various martial arts techniques. There are very few who reach such a high and prestigious distinction and one of them is Ella, a young girl of only 15-16 years old who reached the level of “Sevar”, which is a kind of elite rank among the Shadow Skill possessors. Ella has a foster brother named Gau Ban, he is not as good as his sister but he has an immense hidden power that makes him easily stand out from the rest.

Estamos en un reino llamado Karuda, el hogar de cientos de guerreros que aspiran a poseer las habilidades denominadas "Shadow Skill" que no son otra cosa que la perfección al máximo nivel de diversas técnicas de artes marciales. Son muy pocos los que llegan a tan alta y prestigiosa distinción y una de ellas es Ella, una joven de apenas 15-16 años que alcanzó el nivel de "Sevar", que es una especie de rango élite entre los poseedores de los Shadow Skill. Ella tiene un hermano adoptivo llamado Gau Ban, no es tan bueno como su hermana pero él tiene un inmenso poder escondido que hace que destaque fácilmente por sobre el resto.

In this OVA we will see the two of them, together with Fia Arcana, a sorceress who uses talismans as a means of attack, facing a couple of dark forces. One of them is the Moon King, a demon that appears only at night and that, as its name says, gets its power from the moon. Our three characters will be called by Kyuo Ryu, a beast hunter whose squad, including her grandfather who was also her master, were killed by this King. The movie actually focuses on this battle but before that it gives us a sort of preamble with a couple of fights as if to understand what they do and the power capacity of both Ella and Gau Bau.

En este OVA los veremos a ellos dos, junto a Fia Arcana, una hechicera que usa talismanes como medio de ataque, hacer frente a un par de fuerzas oscuras. Una de ellas es el Rey de la Luna, un demonio que aparece solo de noche y que como dice su nombre obtiene su poder de dicho astro. Nuestros tres personajes serán llamados por Kyuo Ryu, una caza bestias cuyo escuadrón, incluido su abuelo que también era su maestro, fueron asesinados por este Rey. La película en realidad se centra en esta batalla pero antes nos da una especie de preámbulo con un par de peleas como para entender que es lo que hacen y la capacidad de poder tanto de Ella como de Gau Bau.

When we see this it is impossible not to compare with what one saw in those years and in this case the resemblance with Saint Seiya is monumental. I say this because of the animation and the design of the characters. In fact, there are some postures that these characters adopt that are the same as those of the bronze knights; this is not a criticism, I just found it curious and interesting. The sounds, the transitions, the fight scenes, the effects, all the visuals are extremely similar. Anyway, for me these animations have their charm, I don't consider them bad and even more if they were the ones I grew up with, maybe it's a nostalgic issue.

Cuando vemos esto es imposible no comparar con lo que uno veía en esos años y en este caso el parecido con Saint Seiya es monumental. Esto lo digo por la animación y por el diseño de los personajes. De hecho, hay unas posturas que adoptan estos personajes que son iguales a las de los caballeros de bronce; esto no es a manera de critica solo que me pareció curioso e interesante. Los sonidos, las transiciones, las escenas de peleas, los efectos, todo lo visual es sumamente igual. De todas maneras para mi estas animaciones tienen su encanto, no las considero malas y más si con ellas fueron con las que uno creció, puede que sea un tema nostálgico.

The plot is very linear and very simple, there aren't many surprises or anything to highlight. One of the things I pay attention to with this kind of stories are the climaxes of the fights, if there is tension or expectations or a real danger of something bad happening. Here we see a couple of those moments, when all seems to be lost suddenly something happens that changes the script completely, for one who more or less knows how this is handled it's not unexpected but it's always very cool to see these peaks of emotions. I thought it might bore me but it didn't, maybe at some points it gets a little slow but it's nothing serious.

La trama es muy lineal y muy simple, no hay muchas sorpresas ni nada a destacar. De las cosas en la que me fijo con este tipo de historias son en los puntos cumbres de las peleas, si hay tensión o expectativas o un peligro real de que algo malo suceda. Aquí vemos un par de esos momentos, cuando todo parece estar perdido de repente sucede algo que cambia el guión por completo, para uno que más o menos sabe como se maneja esto no es inesperado pero siempre es muy cool ver estos picos de emociones. Pensé que me podía aburrir pero no fue así, quizás en algunos puntos se pone un poco lento pero no es nada grave.

The characters have their point of grace. Despite her youth, she has a serious drinking problem and is extremely greedy, asking for money in return for everything. This does not detract from her being someone who cares for others and fights for the good. Gau Bau seems to be the voice of conscience of the group, always correct and willing to give everything in every battle; he is the brother who is the most rational and calm part. The others contribute but in the end end up being secondary characters.

Los personajes tienen su punto de gracias. Ella a pesar de lo joven, tiene un problema serio de bebida y es sumamente avara, por todo va a pedir dinero a cambio. Esto no le quita que sea alguien que se preocupa por los otros y que luche por el bien. Gau Bau pareciera que es la voz de la conciencia del grupo, siempre correcto y dispuesto a dar todo en cada batalla; es el hermano que es la parte más racional y tranquila. Los demás aportan pero al final terminan siendo personajes secundarios.

Is it an anime that I would watch? - I think so, the fact that they are humans who are always looking to excel and be the best with a pride of stone makes the battles that can be given is pretty good. I think I would watch the other OVAs first and give the anime a chance. These gems from the past should not be allowed to die. The animation is good, there is blood, violence and a touch of comedy.

Es un anime que vería? - yo creo que si, el hecho de que sean humanos que siempre estén buscando superarse y de ser lo mejores con un orgullo de piedra hace que las batallas que se puedan dar sea bastante buenas. Creo que vería primero los demás OVAs y darle oportunidad al anime. Estas joyas del pasado no hay que dejarlas morir. La animación está buena, hay sangre, violencia y un toque de comedia.
