The final days of this epic journey have come, and after leaving Portugal, I had to do more driving mileage to get home... The idea was to make at least one (night) stop in Spain, visit 1-2 cities, and arrive home... It wasn't 100% like that, but we had at least one night in Salamanca, Spain!
As I said in the last post from Porto, the bad weather caught us there and it followed us until the next stop... As a matter of fact, driving from Porto to Salamanca wasn't an easy one... We had rain on our tail, and somewhere around the border between two countries, we had a heavy fog with very bad visibility on the road... So, instead of arriving in Salamanca early afternoon, we got there later and it was still raining... 😒
We found our apartment, tried to find some dry clothes, wait for some time for the rain to stop, but it was persistent too much... When we saw that the weather will not change, we got out for a walk, despite raining... At least, it wasn't like a heavy shower, but rather drizzling rain... I can't remember the time when we get out of the apartment, but it was already dark...
With an umbrella in one hand, and dark outside, it was hard to take photos, and, as you can see, I didn't take too many... It was an hour or two of walking, but I couldn't get many things on my camera... What you can see in front of you is the main square (Plaza Major), which had its New Year decoration (the walk took place on January, 7th) and it looked great! Almost surreal with all these lights...
As it was raining, the main square looks empty, but on the contrary, many people were walking in the narrow passages... You can spot people under those arcs... Of course, nobody was sitting at cafe tables in the middle of the rain... 🤣
As this was the old part of the city, that has a long history, we had a walk around it and many buildings had a similar architecture to the one that you can see in the image below...
This was one of the many churches that can be found in Salamanca, and what was interesting is that you can find some "regular buildings" that looked like religious establishments...
Salamanca is also famous as a big University city... The University of Salamanca is the oldest in Spain as it was founded in 1218!
After a long, exhausting rain walk, I suppose I got hungry, so I took the photo that you can find above... For vegans and sensitive people, DON'T LOOK UNDER! 😂
Salamanca is also famous for their dried meat products, like sausages, hams, bacon, blood sausage, etc...
The plan for the next day was that we will stop in Ávila, as that was our first choice to take a night over, but we didn't find accommodation and went to Salamanca... Unfortunately, the next morning I found out that my turn signal lever (and lights) on the car doesn't work! This means that we had to arrive home before nighttime...
After 7 hours of driving with just 1 or 2 short breaks, we finally arrived home... Before dark! So, our journey didn't finish exactly as we planned, but it was definitely one of those vacations that I will never forget!
