Wildwood state park in Wading River, LI, NY is a great place to experience a mature Oak/Beech forest. 600 acres of rolling terrain bordering the Long Island Sound. You could imagine this is what all of the north shore of Long Island once looked like..
Map along the trail... I started out on the yellow and came back on the red trail.. about a 2 mile walk.
Trails had been closed due to the virus but some had since just opened.
Trail starts out as asphalt but soon become dirt...
Mature Beech tree...
Gravel/dirt path traverses hills and dips...
Many roots anchor the Beech without a main center tap root. Unlike its relative the Oak which has a center tap root for its main support.
Came across a lot of oaks that had been snapped off from the wind...
If you want to get away from the human rat-race go to a local park like Wildwood. Take in the sight, sounds & smells .. look for wildlife, breath in that fresh air then come back for more... 🌈
