Destroying Evidence

I sat down exhausted from the day's stress. I relaxed my muscles, took the remote beside it, and turned on the TV. I didn't intend to watch, I just needed the soothing sound coming from it. It helped me sleep.

I was already hitting REM when I heard something that woke me up instantly. Apparently, people have been coming out to complain of receiving drugs in a coffee bag. The police concluded that a cartel must have accidentally sent it out to people all around the country, and they were searching for the cartel.

I didn't know when I burst out laughing. I mean, really? The police still fell for things like this? Please. That only happened in the movies. I turned off the TV and shook my head at the ridiculousness of the news I had just heard. I made my way to my room to get proper sleep.

I woke up to a new dawn full of possibilities. I was glad I got the needed sleep because I was feeling much better. It was Saturday so I had more time to relax. I got out of bed to make breakfast and do some cleaning up.

As I started cleaning the kitchen counter, my doorbell rang. I went out and saw a delivery man. I squinted my eyebrow and looked at him confused. I didn't order anything.

He asked for me to sign the package. I felt uneasy but signed anyway. He handed it to me afterward and left. I went inside and subconsciously looked around as if someone was going to jump out of the room. I placed the package on the table and sat down, still confused. I then opened the package and bit my inner lip as I saw a coffee bag.

I had seen the exact coffee bag somewhere else but couldn't place a finger on it. So I went further and opened the coffee bag. It took me a second, but then my eyes widened when realization dawned on me.

IT WAS THE COFFEE BAG FROM THE TV!

"Whoa. What am I going to do? How is this possible?" I said to an empty room.

I couldn't believe what was happening. I had outrightly laughed yesterday thinking it was all fiction, but it was there right on the table. Drugs in my sitting room. It was the kind of situation you wanted to wake up from. I immediately stood up and closed the blinds. I was panicking, and my hands were shaking. I stood for a second until the ringtone from my phone made me jump.

I placed my hand on my chest and carried the phone only to see it was my best friend.
What would I say? It wasn't something I should carelessly tell anyone, but it was my best friend. Shouldn't I tell her? I debated for a while until the call dropped.

I couldn't tell her for so many reasons. What if the police were listening and thought I was one of the cartel people? What would she do anyway if I did tell her? She lived across the world. I couldn't possibly put that burden on her. I was beginning to sweat, and the AC was on. I sat again for the umpteenth time that day and tried to calm myself.

No one knew anything right now. Just me. And it would be better to attack, take it to the police and explain. Right? I nodded as if I was answering myself.

"Yes, definitely!" I shouted.

Determined, I carried the package and took it upstairs so I could change it and take it to the police station. I went inside the bathroom and came out with the coffee bag. I took the lighter on my nightstand and burnt the bag. Well, what anyone didn't know won't hurt them, right? I watched the bag burn as I sighed with relief as I did when I poured the drugs down the toilet.
