The Digital Disconnect

In today’s technological era, everyone is always buried in their phones, laptops and other gadgets. I bet we’ve all had that situation where something happened and our moms especially relate it to the fact that you’re always on your phone. I remember having malaria one time and my mom went like, ‘how won’t you have malaria when you’re always on your phone’. And I’m like really?

But looking at it, that’s the reality of most of the youth of today. Some of us can’t even go a minute without our phones especially and only God knows what everyone is doing on his phone. Growing up, used to be so attached to my phone as most of my friends were far away and so our only way of communicating was through social media. But today, I can tell you that I don’t even care about social media. Can you believe since I woke up today I’ve been so busy I even forgot about my phone. People always complain about me being online but not replying to their texts but the truth is, my data is always on, even when I’m asleep.

I can say at this point in my life that I don’t really mind not having access to my phone because my daily rounds leave me little to no time to be on my screens. But if it was 5 years ago, I don’t think I would have been able to even breathe for an hour without my phone. I started this year with the aim of writing a post on hive every blessed day so I can get the one year badge on hive but the unfortunate happened. This is something that I don’t think has ever happened in all my years of living but surprisingly, it decided to happen the same year I decided to write each day of the year.

What happened was, the internet in Ghana refused to work and according to the media, some underwater cables got damaged by God knows what. Imagine being online and all of a sudden everything refuses to work. I remember I had just made my hive post for the day around 10am that day and at around 11am, everything stopped working. I thought I was in this alone until my colleagues at work started complaining also. If I remember right, this happened in March this year.

I was worried because I didn’t know how I was going to make my post the next day, I wasn’t even worried about those who were going to text me on social media and all of that. My mind was all about how I was going to get that one year badge. It wasn’t only Ghana that was affected. I believe Nigeria and other countries were also affected but it hit Ghana the most as every telecom which had 3G was down. Funny enough, that was the time for telecom with 2G to shine. Can you believe these SIM card vendors were now selling the SIM cards for that one network which has 2G for almost $5 and people still bought it. Even though their network was poor, it was better than nothing.

I on the other hand had to endure 3 good days of no activity on hive and also watch my hardwork of 3 months go down the drain. During this time, I was still going to work and so I wasn’t really affected that much by the internet blackout aside my activity on hive being affected. I also used that time to spend more time reading my books which I had kept away for a while but aside that, everything was fine. So, this is my sad unplugging story so far this year. Thanks for passing by.
