Introducing the HiveParents Community!

HiveParents is a community for all things parenting!

I started this community a few months ago but didn't really have the time to dedicate to getting it all set up and running. I've gotten a lot more comfortable with my new job and am finally ready to give this the attention it deserves.

Raising tiny humans into functioning adults can be the most rewarding, and most stressful, challenge one can take on. Having a place to share and connect with others can make the journey a bit less stressful at the very least.

I'm aware we already have a Motherhood Community that does welcome fathers, and I hope to collaborate with them on future events/cross promotions. HiveParents will be a place for more generalized posting around the topics of family, children, and parenting.

Background:

When I joined Steemit a little over four years ago, one of the first "projects" I started was an account called @steemparents. I discovered this platform about three weeks before my second son was born and wanted to bring other parents together to talk about their little ones and the adventure of parenting. At the time, communities didn't exist the way they do now, so we had to gather on Discord and use certain hashtags to sort our content from the rest.

I wrote two weekly curation posts about parenting content and would love to start doing so again. Now that we're all here on Hive (and with what happened to Steemit...), I can't just revive the project under the same name, and now I have the full functionality of a community page to organize and reward content.

I hope to build a caring community of people who offer support and insight to one another without judging the way others raise their children. Families take many forms and everyone parents differently. This community will be an inclusive space offering equality, but never equity. Everyone is to be treated fairly and held to the same standards.

The Rules:

There really aren't many rules, but I will be enforcing the few that exist. My hope is that we can all get along and I won't have to create more later.

  • Keep posts relevant in some way to parenting.

Whether you're talking about your children, your parents, or general topics like health and education, please keep posts relevant to the audience.

  • No Negative judgments, shaming, or harassment.

Again I say; Families take many forms, and everyone parents differently. Shaming or harassing other users for their parenting choices will NOT be tolerated. Like Mama always said; "If you don't have anything nice to say, keep your mouth shut."

  • Please refrain from posting controversial topics.

This sort of falls in line with the previous rule. As an example, I'm personally an advocate for ending male circumcision. I have very strong opinions about it, but understand that parents will always do what they think is best for their children. For that simple reason, I will never post to this community about my advocacy and risk alienating others. I don't want this community to be a place where we debate controversies or the politics of parenting.

  • Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

This one should be a given but it can't hurt to cover all the bases. Copying the work of someone else and trying to pass it off as your own is illegal in pretty much every country on Earth. It is theft, and anyone found plagiarizing will be permanently muted.

Everyone is welcome.

I hope to build a supportive and welcoming community for anyone creating content about, for, or by parents. Come chat about that fun activity you did with your kiddos over the weekend. Tell us what you learned from your parents growing up. Educate others or share ideas about parenting and children or being a family. We want to hear it all!

I thought about instituting a modest 1% automatic beneficiary on posts published to the community, but instead will rely on the rewards gained from curation posts and the generosity of our membership to bolster the amount of rewards we're able to spread around with the community account.

I will soon get badges and beechat set up so that we can all show off our love of being a parent, and come together for chat nights and events directly from the community page. First and foremost, however, I will be gathering some funds together to run an event as a way of kick-starting our roster and post activity. Once we can get a solid feed going, I'll get in touch with @ocd and see about getting us into the incubation program, so getting the community up on its feet should be the first task.

Get Involved!

I'll never be able to manage, moderate, and curate this entire community alone, so if you would like to get involved in any way, please reach out to me either in the comments below or send me a message on beechat! Beyond the need for moderators and curators, we're going to need people posting content. Come join us and share your story. We can't promise huge rewards or anything yet, but together we can grow this community into something we can all be proud of.

Thanks so much for reading, and I hope to see you over at HiveParents!
