Sunday mornings are the most ideal day for sheer and outright laziness. Any Sunday morning where I can sit with a coffee and ... well ... just sit without any immediate need for chores or other responsibilities to occupy my time makes for a successful Sunday morning. Yesterday I spent several hours outside, rode 30 miles, and ran errands. Today is currently about coffee, watching the IIHF World Hockey Championships, and reading comics.
I keep telling @sagesigma that I want to put up a post about my weekly/bi-weekly comic purchases, and I guess I am now finally getting to it! Full disclosure, these are the comics from the past month that I just haven't had the opportunity to read yet. First up are some Bad Idea issues on the docket.
Tankers
Bad Idea Comics seems to market itself on the idea of planned scarcity, and it's sort of a pain in the ass; they make a point of limiting each print run, and then hyping up the demand by, ironically, touting the limited availability. Of course I bought into it, but only because the stories are good.
The premise behind Tankers is that a group of 6 contractors has traveled back in time to change the trajectory of history to ensure that the dinosaurs exist for longer than they should, so earth will have veritable more boatloads of oil than currently exist. Of course, nothing could go wrong.
My local comic book company does not like dealing with Bad Idea, not the least of which is because Bad Idea does not use normally accepted distribution channels. Tankers 2 was ready for me before Tankers 1; my store is good to me, though, and happened to have a few extra of number 1 squirreled away.
Caligulas Safe
Another issue with manipulated scarcity, Caligulas Safe was allowed to be sold only on May 12; any outstanding issues were required to be sent back to Bad Idea after that 24 hour period. Obviously, I was in store on the 12th, but haven't gotten to reading this one yet.
Whalesville
Finally, Whalesville. What happens when you get swallowed by a whale?
And now, onto some non-Bad Idea comics.
Monstrous: Heartbreak and Blood Loss
Monstrous is new to me, but looks pretty damned interesting: what happens when you cross Gothic horror with Steampunk? Monstrous happens. I'm really looking forward to this one. Source Point Press has apparently published a number of these previously, and they look super interesting.
Lighthouse
My first of two from Image Comics, Lighthouse is some outright Science Fiction. I really do like science fiction and have been looking for something to dig my teeth into; this one might do it.
Commanders in Crisis
I'll admit, this particular series took some turns that I simply wasn't expecting. Right now, the Crisis Control is looking to find a way to save the last earth in the universe when the entire emotion of empathy has been eradicated from existence. How do you get a world to care when, literally, they don't have the capacity for it?
Serial
I'll admit, it was the cover to Issue 2 that hooked me on this series. If I can be blunt, I love these covers more than I'm enjoying the story within. The idea of an eternally child-like serial killer hunting a serial killer has potential, but it's not keeping me. Issue 4 might be my last.
The BeQuest
This one has turned into one of my favourites. I swear, Aftershock Comics can do no wrong; everything they touch becomes a fantastic story, and I need to make a point of not buying every last one of their issues. In The BeQuest, an adventuring group of rogues in a fantastical world filled with dragons and elves and fairies finds themselves in... Chicago.
And that's it for today. I have a stack of others that I still need to wrap up in bags and store and, hopefully, I can get through all these before Wednesday, which is New Comic Book Day. It should be a fun way to spend a sweltering hot day in which I do not want to go outside!
