OPERATION NIGHTWATCH - Restoration of Rembrandt's Nightwatch

A fascinating story!

"Imagine: you want to move a large painting, but it doesn't fit in the new place. What do you do? In the case of The Night Watch in 1715, they cut off pieces. These have never been found. That’s why we’ve had so-called artificial neural networks working overtime on reconstructing the original appearance of the painting. Hour upon hour, the computers have been whirring away, recreating these missing pieces on the basis of a 17th-century copy. Read on to find out about all the biggest differences between the two versions."

I had added this painting to "My Collections" at the Rijksstudio some time ago, actually one of the first works added when I joined.

I came across news I found very exciting is that based on a copy, the missing pieces that had been cut off are now being painstakingly restored.
Check it out at the Rijksmuseum (if at all possible, perhaps even in person!):

THE NIGHT WATCH: THE MISSING PIECES

Several sections were cut from The Night Watch in the past. The Operation Night Watch team has successfully recreated these missing pieces, with the help of artificial intelligence.
This part of the presentation has a very thorough video and explanation (in English)

UPDATES JUNE

OPERATION NIGHTWATCH Update June.JPG
Operation Night Watch has collected a huge amount of data -- about 51 terabytes -- from all the different imaging techniques used to study the painting. Things have come a long way since the last major conservation treatment of The Night Watch was performed in 1975-1976. If we used 1976-era technology to store this much data it would require a stack of 8-inch floppy disks stretching more than 320 km tall!

It was already announced in 2018, here is a video posted by the Rijksmuseum:

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam announced that members of the public will be invited to watch the restoration of The Night Watch, Rembrandt’s most celebrated masterpiece next year. The project will begin in July 2019 and the public will be able to watch the entire process at the museum and online.

I hope you enjoyed this fascinating piece of art history.
