In keeping with my soon-to-be old man vibe... I do have the occasional potter around the garden to see what needs to be done, and just to poke around and mutter to myself. With the fast growing season of Spring and Summer now here, a dose of heavy rain followed by lots of sun means that things are shooting up fast!

This will be the year that our kiwi vines are going to make it over the top of the patio area and start providing a bit of shade in the summer. This middle one is the male, and it almost made it last year... but was attached by birds who kept taking the tip off it! This year, it is growing strong and has easily cleared the roof level... and now I will need to train it along the wood structure towards the house. My first thought was a mesh of some sort, but my wife prefer several wires instead... I'm still more keen on the mesh but wires it is!

One of our heavily pruned back bushes doesn't seem to have made it, and as I was wandering past, I gave it a hefty kick to see if it was still alive or if it was mostly rotting inside. Mostly rotten inside and weakened by various grubs that were hollowing it out. So, this one I left as a gift for the local magpies who make their home in one of our gum trees. Hopefully they will remember us as friends who feed them when we do the gardening... and avoid swooping us!

... and several of the large wattles have come down, as well as good chunk of deadwood and some overhanging large branches. There are still a couple of larger trees that are earmarked to come down... but that will be a larger job for a different day with the arborist. Now we are restocked with a large pile of wood mulch for the keeping the weeds at bay!

In the bulbs area, the tulips are pretty much done, and the daffodils were the first to bloom and go... now, it is the turn of the Irises... adding a nice splash of purple to our mostly yellow flowering garden! I will have to re-lay that rock area with a weedmat underneath... sigh, another summer project.

Well, this is the male kiwi, so I suspect that these are not the kiwifruit but probably the buds of flowers? The two female plants aren't quite a robust and tall as this one, so it might not be until next year that we get some fruit out of them!

Ah yes... this is Australia, and we are near a nature reserve... there is a snake in there somewhere.... time to head back inside!
